NEEDS FOR NEW DISCUSSION ON.

Why we learn
How we teach
What we research
What we strive to be
Too much focus on business models resulted in
many negative outcomes.
United Nations pushed for the Sustainable
Development Initiative in 1987.

TEXTILE AND APPAREL INDUSTRY.

One of the most globalized and fragmented
industries of all.
A significant portion of products are multi-national
(over 10,000 touches from all over the world).
Coordinating these 10,000 touches from all over
the world poses tremors challenges to businesses.
Consumers face with flood of foreign goods with a
great degree of distrust and diminishing loyalty.

GLOBAL SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT

Supply chain: a network of materials, information,
and services processing links with the characteristics
of supply, transformation, and demand (Chen &
Paulraj, 2004)
Supply chain management: The systemic, strategic
coordination of the traditional business functions
within a particular company and across businesses
within the supply chain, for the purposes of improving
the long-term performance of the individual
companies and the supply chain as a whole (Mentzer,
2004)

MENTZERS SUPPLY CHAIN

MANAGEMENT

The goal of SCM is to achieve customer satisfaction,

value creation, increased profitability, and strong
competitive advantages.

SCM must be embedded into all aspects of

traditional business functions.
SCM is the higher-level business function than
traditional business functions in which all
traditional functions must feed information and
services to other supply chain functions.

MENTZERS SCM + UNS SUSTAINABILITY

The focus should be on humans and our sustainable
development on the Earth (Developments that meet
present needs without compromising the ability of
future generations to meet their needs by United
Nations, 1987).
Therefore, the outcomes of SCM should be on the triple
bottom lineseconomic, social, and environmental
performance.
Business Model toward Sustainability (BMS) is now
proposed.

CONTRIBUTIONS OF BMS TO DESIGN

It provides big picture goals of Why we learn; How we
teach; What we research; and What we strive to be.
Our efforts to sustainability do not stop at designing
and making sustainable products that might increase
sales or profits.
Our efforts to sustainability starts from recognizing
todays and tomorrows humans needs and wants and
deliver products and services to satisfy them.
Businesses exist to serve this purpose.
It fundamentally links design, product development,
and other supply chain members with UNs Sustainable
Development Initiative for a better world and future.
