Radiology Information

System
It is nervous system of Digital department
RIS drives the workflow of the information of the
department
It is responsible for
- scheduling orders
- capturing relevant clinical information
about
an exam
- providing clinical information to areas of the
department that require it
- preparing prior exam if needed
- providing the information to PACS

Once image is captured, the RIS and PACS

work together to provide necessary
information to radiologist
Then radiologist interpret the exam and
deliver report to clinicians
In addition to clinical functions, RIS
manages billing for the exams and
provides the necessary data to support
management reporting for the department

Process begins with scheduling

The scheduling step kicks off a number of
events within the RIS to prepare for an exam to
be performed.
The process of scheduling an exam captures
appropriate clinical information to determine
exam to be performed
Accurate patient information is required for
proper acquisition of relevant prior exam
information and to ensure that billing can be
performed correctly

The scheduling process is where a majority of

the data errors occurs within system
Three traditional interfaces of scheduling
provide various levels of control over the
integrity of the data being put into system
In HIS scheduling method, traditionally the
lowest level of accuracy exists due to lack of
control over managing the sources of data for
the HIS
Second most inaccurate is the manual
scheduling method and this is done within the
department
Third one is web-based scheduling method is
the most accurate because there is more control
over the incoming data

Once exam is scheduled, the acquisition of

relevant prior exam information and the validation
of patient information. This information is used in
the pre-fetching of prior films
The RIS provides the technologist and radiologist
with relevant information for performing exam
Technologist interacts with RIS either by receiving
paper request or in the digital environment
During this process the RIS tracks the exam status
and the patient. This information is used to
manage the rest of exam transaction

When exam is complete then images

are ready for interpretation
RIS and PACS interact to validate that
the image acquired match the
ordered information
Once the images are determined to
be valid, then exam data are
provided to radiologist for
interpretation

Report in digital department is

captured by speech recognition and
after it is signed by radiologist it is
deliverable to appropriate
destination.
RIS also serves as an archive for all
exam data including reports
