Selflessness and Acceptance of Others
Ability to Overcome Obstacles

Passion and Ability to Inspire

Role models show passion for their work and have the
capacity to infect others with their passion.
They are always trying to give back to the next
generation. That really inspire people.

Clear Set of Values

Role models live their values in the world. Children
admire people who act in ways that support their beliefs.
It helps them understand how their own values are part of
who they are and how they might seek fulfilling roles as
adults.
Role models helped these students understand the
underlying values that motivated people to become
advocates for social change and innovation.

Commitment to Community
Role models areother-focusedas opposed toself-focused.
They are usually active in their communities, freely giving
of their time and talents to benefit people. Students
admired people who served on local boards, reached out
to neighbors in need, voted, and were active members of
community organizations.

Selflessness and Acceptance of

Others
Related to the idea that role models show a commitment
to their communities, students also admired people for
their selflessness and acceptance of others who were
different from them.

Ability to Overcome Obstacles

Young people echoed this sentiment, showing how they
developed theskills and abilities of initiativewhen they
learned to overcome obstacles. Not surprisingly, they
admire people who show them that success is possible.

PRAYERS

BUILDS OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS

HELPS US OVERCOME TEMPTATION
HELPS US DETERMINE GODS WILL
PRAYER ACCOMPLISHES GODS WORK
A WEAPON OF SPIRITUAL WARFARE

BUILDS OUR RELATIONSHIP

WITH JESUS
I am first called to prayer because it is a key vehicle to
building my love relationship with Jesus Christ. Hear me
now this is important. Christianity is not primarily rules. It
is a relationship.

HELPS US OVERCOME
TEMPTATION
Second in our list of reasons is that prayer is an important
instrument in our overcoming sin and temptation.
Perhaps no experience in the earthly life of Christ is more
instructive on prayer than Jesus teaching and subsequent
modeling in the twenty-second chapter of Luke.

HELPS US DETERMINE GODS

WILL
Third in our series of reasons to pray is the following: we
pray because prayer is crucial in determining Gods will.
Now youre talking, you say. I always use prayer when I
want to know Gods will. I pray about my choices, and
when I have `peace about one of the options, then I go
with it.

PRAYER ACCOMPLISHES GODS

WORK
We come now to the fourth of our obvious (or not-soobvious) reasons to pray. It is this: prayer is a major way
we accomplish Gods work in the world.

A WEAPON OF SPIRITUAL
WARFARE
The fifth reasons to pray is that prayeris a major weapon
in fighting the spiritual battle. Ephesians six, verses ten to
twenty, outlines someof the armaments in the arsenal of
God.

The Bible is full of stories, from Genesis clear to
Revelation. Entire books of the Bible are dedicated to

funny; some are poignant; and some just make you shake
your head.

PARABLES
Jesus conveyed some of his most interesting teachings through parables,
although there were many other means of communication in his days,
apparently more direct and conventional. It has been calculated that
about one third of Jesus teachings transmitted in the synoptic gospels
have come to us in the form of parables.
The teaching of Jesus is so much related to parables, that when the word
"parable" is mentioned many associate it immediately with Jesus and the
Gospels. However, the parable (called in Hebrewmashal), is quite a
commun genre in rabbinic wisdom and oriental literature, largely
widespread through all times, milieux and cultures around the world.
