Introduction
Bauer Media Group publishes Heat, KISS, Empire, Take A Break, Bella and Magic.

Bauer Media Group


Bauer media is a european based media company with headquarters in germany
and was founded in 1875. The company operates in 19 different countries
including Poland,UK, Australia, New Zealand and USA. It i now in its fifth
generation of being run by the Bauer family.

The Market Position


Bauer has sold 600 million+ in the last 12 months which makes them the biggest
selling weekly and monthly + key category leaders.

Competition
The Newhouses who control Conde Nast the publishers of Vogue magazine are
competition for Bauer as they both publish content aimed at the same target
market.
Advantages: With having competition they have their weak points highlighted
easily so can then work on their weak points which helps them develop more.
Disadvantages: The magazines they publish will clash with other publishers which

Production Process
Date of publication - This needs to be decided early on to ensure that everything can be produced in a realistic time.
Managing the schedule - Creating a realistic schedule to make sure everything that needs doing is complete and is done to a
deadline
Editorial or budgetary decisions - To decide any major editing decisions and set a budget for the whole production of the
magazine including the equipment and printing costs.
Content acquisitions - gathering all the content for the magazine and decided whether stories are more important than others
Sub - editing - making sure that the information is accurate, the articles are written with correct punctuation and words spelt
correctly.
Page layout - creating the layout of the magazine and using the space of pages wisely
Proofreading - To make sure there isnt any errors within the magazine which may have gone unnoticed.
Emailed to printer/Pre press - making any final checks also that the files sent to the publisher includes the correct images and
fonts.

Target Audience
The Target audience differs as Bauer publishes different magazines meaning the
target audience ranges. For example the target audience for take a break is 18 to
40 year old women where empire is aimed at movie lovers for both male and
female but more predominantly male.
The age of their viewers varies however the range is often between 16 to 50 year
old male and females depending on the magazine

Marketing/Promotion
To advertise the magazines they often use video adverts on the magazine's official
website of the magazine. Some magazine have there own in store display whilst
selling the magazine and will often push the promotion one step further by using
eye catching colours which link in with the design of the magazine.

Advertisers
The advertisers are a extra brand created by Bauer. Bauer XCEL Media advertises
the content of their magazines. They also organise the advertisement for other
paying businesses to feature in the magazine.

Distribution
The magazines are often distributed either weekly or monthly but this varies on the
magazine.
Bauer sell their magazines through newsagents and and other shops throughout
the country
The magazines are also available online as well as in print form.

News UK
News UK is the publishing company and The subsidiary publishers are The Times
Newspaper Ltd and News Group Newspapers Ltd which publishes the The Sun
newspaper. They also publish The Times and The Sunday Times.

Competitors
Advantage: Having competition like The Daily Mail can make the publishers want
to make their article different even though they are writing similar stories and and
this creates individuality.

Disadvantages:With writing similar or the same stories you can easily lose readers
when the paper doesn't stand out.

Market Position
News Uk are high up in the market position with one highly read paper competing
against others such as The Daily mail and The Daily Mirror
The other two newspapers aren't so high up however they are aimed at a
completely different target audience but incorporating that they have increased
significantly over the last 15 years

Production Process continued


The first step is to gather all the relevant information that will feature in the
newspaper
The next step is Prepress and this includes the layout of the newspaper, editing of
the stories to determine what will go into the magazine. Advertisement is designed
to advertise the newspaper.
Once it's ready for press it gets printed and then distributed to a variety of sellers.
Finally Postpress is where the data for circulation of the printed copies is collected
and then compared to previous releases and can show whether the sales have
increased or decreased.

Readership
The Target market for news group newspapers is different depending on the paper
as the sun is more celebrity and gossip based paper and is aimed at working class
20 to 50 year olds where the Times is aimed at businessmen and generally people
group A in the young and rubicam chart.

And The Times is 443,361

Marketing and Production


News Uk advertise certain additions of their papers if they are offering certain
limited addition extras like a free cutout picture which they know would be popular.
They also use instore different colours on their mast heads compared to others to
make their paper stand out more.

Advertisers
The newspapers have their own advertisement team which organise the
advertisement for the papers and they also have a certain amount a space
allocated for other businesses to advertise themselves and they can renew this
every week or on a one off ocasion.

Distribution
The Newspapers published by News UK are available in print form as well as
online in digital form
The Times and The Sun are sold daily throughout the country (except liverpool)
where The Sunday Sun is only sold on Sundays.
The papers are purchased from newsagents and grocery shops throughout the
country
