Who Killed Carelton

Comet?
By Robert Gyomber, Emma Robertson, Carter Fong,
and Casey Johnston

THE CULPRIT
We are asking for an arrest warrant for Nancy Normal on
the charge of first-degree murder concerning the case
involving the victim known as Carelton Comet.

EVIDENCE
Of the three black pens collected from suspects, Nancy Normals pen
matched the note given to Carelton Comet at the crime scene, which read,
YOU ARE A DEAD MAN.
The blood type that was found at Crime Scene 1 was the same as Careltons
blood type (O). Also, he was the only one that bled at that time, so we
concluded that the two blood types matched.
The blood marked Crime Scene 2 matches the blood of Nancy Normal.
Again, she is the only one who bled, among those with blood type (A),
therefore the sample must belong to her.
Her karyotype contains three X chromosomes rather than the normal amount
of two.
The DNA fingerprinting results of Crime Scene 2 matched the DNA
fingerprints of Nancy Normal; both DNA samples created only one red and
one yellow band each.

Reasoning
Its evident that the pen collected from Nancy had the same pigmentation as the
pen used to write the note
Nancy may have accidentally hurt herself with some of the broken glass,
drawing blood.
Her karyotype shows she has Triple X syndrome, which has common mental
effects such as a 20-point-lower IQ, anxiety, poor self-esteem, and
depression. This could prompt her to commit acts one would not normally do,
and she may or may not understand their consequences.
This shows that it was possible that Nancy was involved in the crime.

Methods and Techniques

1) A karyotype is the number and appearance of chromosomes in the nucleus of a eukaryotic cell. A
single normal karyotype contains 22 sets of chromosomes, with each individual set containing 2 of the
same chromosome. In addition, each normal karyotype has one set of two sex chromosomes. Typically,
men have one X and one Y chromosome and women have only two Xs, but in Nancys case, she has
three X chromosomes in her karyotype. This leads to Triple X Syndrome (see above), and blood with a
matching karyotype was found in the Crime Scene 2 blood sample. Also, Triple X Syndrome can cause
one to own a lower IQ, possibly allowing her to not think things through about the murder.
2) DNA fingerprinting is a method of investigating an individuals unique patterns of DNA and matching it
to another sample. This can be accomplished by taking a plastic tray and inserting a comb-like object into
the tray and pouring different DNA samples from each of the suspects, Crime Scene 1, and Crime Scene
2. Then, we took away the comb, leaving small pockets of DNA. Next, we attached cables, which we
connected to a device that sent electric pulses through the gel, spreading the DNA out in specific patterns
of red, yellow, and blue bands.

3) We used a pedigree to learn about the suspects family histories and connect them to the murder. A
pedigree is a chart used to show deaths, disease, relationships, and family ties. From this, we have found
that Nancys father had passed away from a strange gardening accident, and ironically carried
Huntingtons disease, as well. Also, the person she admires, Fred Flimmer, had a sister, who was killed
by Thomas Sandstone (the father). Thomas later changed his name to Carelton Comet, as an attempt to
start a new life out of prison.
4) Blood typing is a way of collecting blood for a certain purpose. We used this to compare blood
samples, received from each of the suspects and both crime scenes. First, you would drop 10 drops of
the blood into two sections of a spot plate. Then, do the same for anti-A and anti-B antibodies (one
antibody in each). If the blood clumps when mixed with anti-A, then the blood is type A. The opposite
goes for type B-blood. Type AB blood would clump with both anti-A and anti-B. However, for type O, the
blood would clump with neither anti-A nor anti- B.

5) To discover that the ink in Nancys pen matched that of the note, we used the method of ink
chromatography. First, we took a glass cup and poured a small amount of rubbing alcohol into the
bottom. Then on a small strip of paper, we drew a dot about of the way up from the bottom, using each
pen collected at the crime scene from possible suspects. Next, we placed each piece of paper in the cup,
in a triangle-like pattern, and let the alcohol soak in and distribute the pigments of each pen. The
distribution of Nancys pen, pen 2, matched the ink of the note.

CLEAR PARAGRAPH
We are asking for an arrest warrant for Nancy Normal on the charge of firstdegree murder concerning the case involving the killing of the victim known as
Carelton Comet. We have surmised that the murder was premeditated, or
planned. Our evidence and reasoning, as well as motive for the murder, are as
follows. First, we found out that the pen that was used to write the note to Carelton
that read, YOU ARE A DEAD MAN matched the ink of Nancy Normals pen at Rf
pigment value 0.33, rather than Fred Flimmer and Sam Sophomore, who were
also carrying black pens at Rf pigment values of 0.40 and 0.23, respectively. This
piece of information can support the theory that she wrote the note threatening
Careltons life.

CLEAR PARAGRAPH, continued

Also, in Crime Scene 1, the hair sample found matched Theresa Terra and
Carelton and on Crime Scene 2 matched with Glen Glee, which can help point to
possible suspects in directions other than Nancy. However, in Crime Scene 1,
Careltons blood was evident from the steak knife in the back of his neck and, of
the three with O-type blood, he is the only one who bled, while in Crime Scene 2
Nancy must have drawn blood because she of the three with A-type blood is the
only one who cut herself on some broken glass from the tabletop, once again
pointing to her. Next, the DNA fingerprinting test results show that the DNA
gathered at Crime Scene 2 has the same color band pattern, of red and yellow, as
Nancy Normal.

CLEAR PARAGRAPH 3
Nancys karyotype has 3 X-chromosomes, instead of 2. Having 3 Xchromosomes can cause a defect called Triple X syndrome, which can have a
mental effect, such as a 20 point lower IQ. We have also surmised that her motive
is a violent reaction to her young cousins untimely death, which led her aunt,
Nina, to fall into deep depression. Her Triple-X syndrome may have also been
enhanced due to her fathers death in a bizarre gardening accident during her very
early youth. This combination of events, as well as her innate jealous personality,
could have influenced her mental state and caused her to kill Carelton Comet,
regardless of who he may or may not be, and not understand the consequences of
her actions due to her mental limitations.
