ISBT KASHMERE GATE

a case study

The Kashmere Gate ISBT is operating

from a developed complex wherein large
number of government offices and
kiosks/shops
are
also
existing.
Accordingly, the development of concept
for this ISBT shall have to be planned for
making provision for hotel, public
utilities, parking etc. in order to generate
maximum revenue as permissible in the
Master Plan.

A site map of ISBT

External aspects
The ISBT has two accesses, one from the road from
Shahdara and another from Rajghat & Wazirabad.(Ring
road).
At present,Interstate,DTC & local buses operate from
Kashmere Gate ISBT.
There is only one entrance to the ISBT(from Ring Road)
which is common for all types of buses, though the bays
are different. After arrival ,the buses have to take a
sharp U-turn for the exit point while departing from the
bays. This entrance is parallel to the metro track on the
North-Eastern side.
Presently, there are 60 active bus bays,31 idle parking
spaces for buses,14 alighting bus bays, and 12 local bus
bays.
The bus bays are situated at the ground floor level.

Schematic Plan

Visual Aspects
The approach to the bus
terminus from the Wazirabad
road.There is a marked
absence of good signages
,though it is mentioned that
this is the entrance for buses
only, two wheelers also enter
the premises at times due to
confusion.

Due to lack of proper Auto

stands, autorickshaws are
sometimes parked near
entrance
causing
hindrance to traffic flow
and pedestrian movement,
which is not visually
appealing.

Due to lack of access to

daylight ,the waiting hall
remains dark even in the
daytime. Though the
space is huge, the visual
appeal is lacking.

Positive aspects
It is located at the intersection of NH-24 & NH28 ,which makes the terminus easier to
approach by road.
Due to the construction of a flyover to
Shahdara, the access has become easy with
reduced traffic jams.
Different circulation spaces for diff. type of
vehicles.
Provision of refreshment joints.
Provision of a waiting area with a large capacity of
seating with proper display to navigate the
occupants.
Well connected to other parts of the city by a network
of metro, prepaid taxis / autos & local buses.
Disable friendly, ramps provided.

Positive aspects
Provision of Ticket counters at the waiting
area
The staff area and the passenger area are at
different
floors.
Provision of a workshop.
Presence of overhead foot bridges.
Police control room.
The local buses coming from the western
side of the bus stand come enter and exit
from the same side

Negative Aspects
No re-fuelling stations.
Public urinals at the main pedestrian entrance,
creates an unwelcoming environment.
Signage problems-The lack of proper signage
is a noticeable & negative aspect of this
ISBT.Being the oldest ISBT in Delhi, there
should be proper signage. The lack of signage
makes it difficult for passengers while
boarding the buses to longer destinations.
Same entrance for the staff and the visitors.
