    The Crusades were a series of military expeditions launched by European Christians to recapture the Holy Land from Arab control between 1095-1291. While the Crusaders initially recaptured parts of Palestine and Syria, Muslim forces ultimately retook the Holy Land. The Crusades opened Europe to trade and knowledge from the Middle East. The Black Death plague arrived in Europe from Asia in the 1300s, spread by flea-infested rats. It caused around 25 million deaths across the continent. The plague's high mortality rates weakened the authority of the church and feudal systems, and led to changes in medieval society.
