(This is not the notes for the topic. It is an explanatory notes to remember the
reason for doing a particular mapping in the table above)

Key words: Degree of polymerization, polymers, molecular

weight averages (Mn, Mw, Mz)

SO 1: Degree of Polymerization
1. Polymers are aggregates of large molecules comprising
well defined repeat units.
2. The number of times the repeat unit occurs in a
molecule is called degree of polymerisation.

S.O: 2 - Importance of the

Degree of polymerization
1. As degree of polymerisation increases for a particular
polymer, Melting temperature increases.
2. Higher the degree of polymerisation , higher the tensile
strength of polymers
3. Higher the degree of polymerisation , higher will be the
viscosity

S.O: 3 Relationship between Degree

of polymerization and Molecular
Weight
Degree of polymerization (Dp)

multiplied by molecular

weight of repeat unit is equal to molecular weight of the

polymer.
MW = Dp x m
Whereas, MW molecular weight of polymer,
m molecular weight of monomer / repeating unit

Formative assessment I
1.

Molecular weight of Nylon 6 is 15000. Calculate the Dp.

2.

The repeating unit in the cotton has two glucose units, called
cellobiose. Cotton consists of about 5000 cellobiose units.
Any guess about Dp interms of glucose units?

3.

Molecular weight of a polymer is =

Molecular weight of

repeat unit x --A. Average MW

Chain width

B. Average DP

C. Chain length

D.

Why Molecular Weight Average?

1. An important feature of polymers is that all their
molecules are not of identical molecular weight.
2. Molecular weight distribution influences the properties of
the final product, must be controlled through appropriate
variation of process parameters.

S.O: - 1). Number Average Molecular

Weight (Mn)
1. Number average molecular weight is defined as the total
weight of all the molecules in a given sample divided by
the total number of molecules
Mn =

NiMi
Ni

2. Where Ni is the number of molecules and Mi is the

molecular weight of the i

th

molecule.

2). Weight Average Molecular

Weight
It (Mw) is defined as the total of the number of molecules
multiplied by the square of molecular weight of all the
species divided by the total weight of all the species of the
molecules present in given sample.

NiMi

Mw =

3). Z Average Molecular Weight

This is a higher power average as defined by the
following expression and is useful in the interpretation
of melt flow of the polymer.
Mz =

NiMi
NiMi

3
2

1. Principle: Bigger polymers molecules make a solution more

viscous than small ones do.
2. Its closer to the weight average.
