Limit Manager

Objectives

What is the Limit Manager?

Is an application that allows to manage the use of multiple sets of limits that can
be applied to Measurands and to Process Values

Supports the change of limits for reporting of overloads, voltages and any
monitored limit for variables of SCADA

The selection of the Limit Set that is defined as active can be done by the
operator, or by a change of date, or time of day, or dependent on a reference
measurement that can be temperature, humidity or a numerical value calculated
by an application that determines a numerical index that allows the selection of a
Limits Set

Limits Configuration
There are several types of limits that can be configured:
The most common are:

Voltages by level, region, etc

Overloads in overhead lines

Overloads in underground cables

Typified SCADA measurements (temperatures)

A maximum of 20 types of limits can exist

Each process value or measurement must be associated with a type of limit in

DE400; these can be visualized in the NMTAB Active Limit display

The active limits can be manually updated by the operator if required. These are
duly identified in the Active Limit display

These changes will be kept until they are manually removed by the operator

The updates do not affect the Limits Sets defined in Data Engineering

Limits Ranges and Conditions for Selection of Limits

Sets

The ranges are shown in the Limit Type display

The conditions that must be fulfilled to choose the Limits Set are shown
as well in the Limit Type display

A maximum of 20 types of limits can be defined

ABB Group December 15, 2016 | Slide 4

Attributes of Limit Types

Several Limits Sets may exist within one Limit Type

A name is defined for the Limit and the values that are associated with it being
selected

A Limit Type might comprise a high limit and a low limit; or have several high limits
without having to define lower limits

When under the control of the Limits Manager only the limits that have been defined
for the type will be used to alarm. The rest will be ignored

A nominal value can be specified for the limit that is not used for alarms, but is
displayed as a reference in the Alarm Manager displays

Each limit type can contain up to 20 limits sets

ABB Group December 15, 2016 | Slide 4

Mechanisms for Update of Limits

3 types of mechanisms are supported

By date For different seasonal stations (summer, winter)

By time - To be able to separate schedules (for example peak or off peak)

Depending on a value that determines an activation condition. The time that defines
the periodicity for review of activation conditions/selection of limits are configurable.
For example, the date by days, but in function of a set value of number of minutes

Limits Sets can be configured to be chosen by the operator-only (in this case there are
no automatic activation mechanisms)

In cases where the change condition overlaps (eg LOW LIM = 30 C to 50 C and HIGH
LIM -8 30C, the limit associated with higher range values is always selected - in this
case 30-50 C

A default limit can be set for cases where no range condition is met

A flag can be configured to reset the Operator-modified Seasonal limits the following day
(at the end of the current day 12-PM)

The dynamically selected limits are kept changing unless the operator inhibits them

Definition of Limits Type

The Limits Types must be defined to which the different Limit Sets will be
associated, which will be selected according to the value of the limit change

Definition of the Limits Type

The limits that will be modified by the Limit Manager can be selected
There is a validation that requires the value of these limits to be consistent:

2 - Calculate the Limits with SPL or ARTC and store them in Measurement variables
3 Create an SPL-Point Group for each telemetered measurement
