Bellwork: Finish bacteria notes (15 mins)

Last of the book work time (50 mins)
Protist Notes (the rest of class)

Bacteria
2 Kingdoms-Archaebacteria (extremists) and
Eubacteria (true-bacteria)
Both kingdoms have consumers and producers.
Microscopic and simple-all are single-celled
3 shapes-rods(bacillus), spheres (coccus),
spirals (spirillum)
3 arrangements of these shapes 2 together
(diplo), Clustered (staphylo), and chains
(strepto)-see camera

Structure
Typical Bacterial cell-camera
Wall to keep excessive water out, or the cell would
burst.-penicillin (an antibiotic) works by breaking
apart that wall to let water in and kill the cell.
Pili for sexual reproduction
DNA in a ring called a plasmid.
Sometimes an outer capsule forms in harsh
environments (endospore)-like hibernation for
bacteria.

Metabolism
As before, some are consumers, some
photosynthetic, some chemosynthetic
Respiration can be aerobic (w/ oxygen) or
anaerobic (w/o oxygen)
Obligate anaerobes die in the presence of
oxygen.
Obligate aerobes die without it.

Reproduction
Asexual-Binary fission (one bacteria splits
into two). Each cell is identical to the
original.
Sexual-Conjugation (bacteria exchange
genetic material through the pili). Each cell
has a mixture of genetic information.

Bacterial Functions
Nitrogen fixation-making N2 in the atmosphere
useable
Decomposition
Food production
Digestion
Disease-causing
Population control
etc.
