WHAT IS TAG QUESTION?

It is a question added at the end


of a sentence. The function is
chiefly to make sure their
information is correct or to seek
the agreement.

Hows the rule?


If the statement is positive (affimative
sentence), then the question tag will be
negative.
Affirmative sentence+negative tag =
affirmative answer expected.
Mary is here, isnt she? Yes, she is
You like tea, dont you? Yes, I do
They have left, havent they? Yes, they have.

If the statement is negative (negative


sentence), then the question tag will be
positive (affirmative).
Negative sentence+affirmative tag= negative
answer expected.
Mary isnt here, is she? No, she isnt
You dont like tea, do you? No, i dont
They havent left, have they? No, they
havent

Negative words
Never, seldom, rarely, hardly, nothing, nobody
Positive sentence which contains negative
words will be considered by negative
sentences.
Ex. Diana never goes to the clinic, does she?
Nothing is wrong, is it?
Nobody called on the phone, did they?
Youve never been there, have you?

We use will/would with the imperative

Open the window, will you?

We use wont with the polite request

We use shall after lets
