FlexiBSC Planning -Subnet math - m, n

The optimal m and n are power of 2 and thus we can write

m = 2i (1)

n = 2p (2)

In FlexiBSC we can have max 6 active ETPE n would be 8 (6 active and two
spare subnets)

In FlexiBSC:

n = 8 (6+2)
p=3 (3)

m is to be calculated. m = f(k, s)
Soc Classification level

14 Nokia Siemens Networks MODULE 8 - 2 Nov 2012/Raimo Ahosola Presentation / Author / Date
FlexiBSC Planning -Subnet math - f

The optimal k and s depends on

Total available IP@ range
Required reservation of IP@ for future use
Strategy of sharing subnets between technologies: 2G, 3G, LTE

The IP@ not used for 2G (BCF) can be used for 3G, LTE or may be left unused
for future purposes e.g. BTS configuration expansions: each system module
needs own IP@

The unused IP@ can be mark as free IP@, f. The number of free IP@ can be
calculated based on the following formula. This assumes one IP@ for router.

f = 232-s - 3 k (4)

Soc Classification level

15 Nokia Siemens Networks MODULE 8 - 2 Nov 2012/Raimo Ahosola Presentation / Author / Date
FlexiBSC Planning -Subnet math - /s

Example of free IP @ (f)

/30 has no free IP@ for future expansions or to be used for other technologies
minimum 2G BTS subnet is /29
E.g. 3 BCF and 2 IP@ for future use
/27 for 8 sites each having single BCF (k=8) 21 free to be used e.g. for 3G and
LTE. If we assume that all sites have all technologies then 5 IP@ remains free
for future use: 8+8+8+5+1 router + broadcast + network IP@ = 32

16 Nokia Siemens Networks MODULE 8 - 2 Nov 2012/Raimo Ahosola Presentation / Author / Date
FlexiBSC Planning -Subnet math - /c and /u

The super-net size needs to be calculated

/c = m * n * /s
/u = m * /s

This can be written as follows applying formulas (1),(2) and (3)

/c = 2i * 2p * /s = 2i+p * /s = /(s-i-p) = /(s-i-3)

/u = 2i * /s = 2i * /s = /(s-i)

Total number of BCFs in FlexiBSC (B)

Limited by the number of IP@
256 BCF per ETP * 6 ETP = 1536 IP@ for BCFs
Limited by #TRX
A) average 10 TRX per BCF: 4200 TRX per FlexiBSC/10 TRX per BCF = 420 BCF
B) average 4 TRX per BCF: 4200/4 = 1050 BCF
#BCF is typically closer to 400 than 1000

B = k * m * #ETPE

Applying (3) for full configuration FlexiBSC ETPE = 6

B = k * 2i * 6 2i = B/(k*6) | lg2 lg2(2i) = lg2(B/(k*6)) = i

FlexiBSC Planning -Subnet math Subnet efficiency

Subnet efficiency can be expressed as #BCF IP@ per /24

For BTS CUS-plane ( or total for single VLAN approach)

B B B 2 (c-24) * B
c = ----------- = ------------------- = ------------------ = -------------
/c /(24 24 +c) 2(24-c) * /24 /24

c = 2(c-24) * B per /24 subnet

for two VLAN approach assuming that the size of M-plane subnet equals the size of CUS-
plane subnet we have twices as much address space and thus
c = *2(c-24) * B per /24 subnet = 2-1*2(c-24) * B per /24 subnet

cm = 2(c-1-24) * B per /24 subnet
