Difference Between Advertising and Public Relations:

According to Forbes, advertising and public relations are very different.

It is described as public relations as being something where trust is gained, shares

why something is important and uses vocal and language. Whereas, advertising
gains exposure, explains on why you should buy something and mostly use visuals.
Public Relations in:
Politics:

History: In England, Kings and Queens use to tell playwrights to write them how
they wanted the public to see them.

Today, politicians use PR firms not only for PR use, but to hire experts to run and/or
manage their campaign.

The US Government is the second largest PR firm in the world, spending at least 4.5
billion dollars and has over 3,000 jobs.
Public Relations in:
Sports:

PR is used on specific player, teams and events to increase the publics awareness
and interest.

People who work in Sports PR also help, strategize and drive sales of merchandise or
clothing related to the team.

PR in sports also work on things like team strikes, sex/affair scandals and
concessions costs.
Public Relations in
Entertainment:

Most PR work in entertainment is creating and promoting lies about celebrities .

Other work in entertainment includes attracting attention for concerts, fashion

shows, festivals and movie premiers from people.

In entertainment, something else thats an important part of entertainment PR is

helping create an image to a fallen celebrity or bands/actor on the rise- to get the
attention from the public as needed.
PR and Social Media
Because of social media, public relations has changed. With social media, PR has the
opportunity to share any information want with a touch of a button.

With social media and technology, PR employees have a larger audience and can get
word out faster.

The power of social media gives PR the power to access what people say about
companies or people, giving them an idea of what to fix or focus on.

When using social media, Public Relation agents can chose a target audience or even
see where most of their audience is coming from.
PR in Sociology
Conflict Theory:

Conflict theory can be seen in public relations when looking at the distribution side.
Public relations can be used to show inequality and conflict to society in certain
perspectives and also help spread awareness.
PR in Sociology
Functionalism:

When reading about Functionalism we know that it interprets each part of society
in terms of how it contributes to the stability of the whole society. I think this
definition helps show how public relations fits in with functionalism. Public relations
is a part of our society and with it, we can learn different views on problems or issues
and possibly change sides and together, become stronger as a society .
How do people in society perceive
PR?
Public Relations tends to get a bad reputation in society. It is believed that public
relations bends the truth, hides it or makes it up. People believe PRs job is to create
lies or hide truths.
How PR views PR
Public relations views itself as helpful towards society. Members in PR take pride in
their work and claim that they changed the attitudes and views of people for certain
social issues. They also state that they helped companies in need with pro-bono
services.
Stable PR Features/ Unchanged
Features
Public relations has always been responsible for creating awareness for clients.
Public relations in politics, helping politicians with campaigns has also stayed the
same for hundreds of years.
Personal Changes to Public
Relations
Personally, I would not change anything about public relations- the institution itself. I
think that PR is a successful and strong area and is currently in an incline when it
comes to starting careers. Public relations uses certain strategies for a reason and
personally, I believe it works.

However, looking at certain PR agents or firms, I do believe I would do certain

projects differently and possibly more organized.
