In general, the milling machine holds the workpiece and advances or feeds it slowly under the rotating cutter in such a way that a surface cut is completed in one translational of the workpiece. Drilling machines are those machine tools which hold a drill or cutting tool that can be fed into the work to produce a hole of a given size. In most cases the drill or cutting tool rotates while the work is stationary; in some cases, the work may rotate while the drill is stationary. The origin of drilling is not definitely MILLING & known, but drilling processes were used O D RP I LE LIR N GA T IONS long before Christian era, and abrasive drilling was used back in Stone Age. Drilling machines are highly developed

The first successful milling machine was designed by Eli Whitney, the inventor of the cotton gin, about 1818. This machine bears little resemblance to the present-day milling machine, and it did not have a very extensive use. After Whitney, a universal milling machine was developed by F. W. Howe in 1852. However, this machine was not a success until it was redesigned in 1862 by Joseph R. Brown of the firm of Brown and Sharpe. Modern universal milling machines have MILLING & O D RP I LE LIR N GA T IONS

Classification of Milling Machines
According to the way the workpiece is moved or fed with respect to the cutter, there are plain milling machines and universal milling machines. In the plain miller, the piece has translation only, usually in two horizontal directions and one vertical direction. In the universal miller, the piece may be given of translation, as in the plain milling machines, and in addition, a motion of MILLING & O D RP I LE LIR N GA T IONS
