THE ARRIVAL

OF THE
FRENCH
AND
THE BRITISH IN
THE AMERICAS
BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THE
ARRIVAL OF THE FRENCH
It was only after a French privateer
captured a Spanish ship laden with
Mexican gold and silver that attentions
were directed westward.
A French navigator by the name of
Jacques Cartier found areas of what we
know today as Canada for example
Montreal (in 1534).
A series of French expedition followed by
navigators such as Jean-Franois de la
Rocque and Sieur de Roberval.
BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THE ARRIVAL OF THE BRITISH

Sir Humphrey Gilbert, had voyaged

across the Atlantic and claimed
Newfoundland for the British crown (after
the vikings had settled there)
In 1585, Sir Walter Raleigh (Gilberts
youngest half brother) took on one of the
first English settlement attempts. He set
up a colony of about 100 men on the east
coast of North America, on land he
named Virginia.
WHY DID THE BRITISH AND
THE FRENCH COME TO THE
CARIBBEAN?
GOLD
That is what they
wanted -_-
Early explorations and
conquests were made by
theSpanishand the
Portuguese.

News had spread throughout

Europe about the new world ,
and how Spain and Portugal
had been acquiring wealth
AND THATS WHEN THE
BRTISH AND FRENCH
NATION ATTACKED
During the 1500s ,
France and Britain came
to seek wealth, thereby
making their empire
more powerful.
The Americas had lots
of gold and other
precious metals.
As time progressed,
particularly in the 1600s,
there was a shift in the reason
for the French and English
coming to the Caribbean.
The native Indians of the
Americas had died (genocide)
and it was now the era where
sugar was in high demand in
Europe.
French and English settlers
therefore came to the
Caribbean to acquire land, upon
which the cultivation of sugar
cane and manufacturing of
sugar, molasses and rum would
be done.
WHAT WAS THE ROUTE
TAKEN BY THE FRENCH AND
BRITISH?
SETTLEMENT PATTERNS
French pattern of living in cities alongSt.
Lawrence Rivertrade route with very
little permanent settlement elsewhere.
The British followed two different patterns

of settlement: plantations
inChesapeakeandCarolinasand family
farms in New Englandand Middle
Colonies.
THE BRITISH TENDED TO SETTLE ON THE
COAST WHILE THE FRENCH SETTLED
INLAND
EVIDENCE OF ENGLISH AND FRENCH
SETTLEMENT IN THE AMERICAS

Remains of old English and French had

been found time to time by several
archaeologists.

This was basically

the way a french and
english settlement
looked in the 16th
century
The large development of Chattel
Slavery is major evidence of the
settlement of the French and English,

Plantation owners from these two

European countries settled on land within
the areas of the New World and acquired
people from Africa to work on them as
slaves.
Modern Day evidence
of their settlement
can be seen as it
relates to the culture
of these territories.
(an example from each empire
shall follow)
HAITI
-Even though Haitis roots reside in West
Africa, their language is of a French
Dialect.
-Haitian Music such as Compas and
Merengue has French influence.

This is
the merengue
dance
JAMAICA
-Despite the race diversity in Jamaica, the
dominant language is English.
-Festival dances such as maypole is done
during
independence festivals and maypole
originated
from Europe, passed on to Jamaica by the
English.
SO IN ESSENCE, THE FRENCH AND
THE ENGLISH FOLLOWED SPAINS
AND PORTUGALS FOOTSTEPS IN
ACQUIRING LAND IN THE NEW
WORLD IN ORDER TO GAIN WEALTH
FOR THEIR INDIVIDUAL EMPIRES,
RESULTING IN THE DEATH OF THE
NATIVE INDIANS OF THE CARIBBEAN
AND ALSO MILLIONS OF AFRICANS
THE END!
