INTRODUCTION
Rohiniisaresidentialsub-cityinnorthwestDelhiinIndia.Itisthesecondlargestsub-cityinAsia,

UNDERSTANDING THE CONTEXT
DELHI-
Delhi, the capital of India has a strong historical background. It was ruled by some of the most
powerfulemperorsinIndianhistory.
ThehistoryofthecityisasoldastheepicMahabharata.ThetownwasknownasIndraprastha,where
Pandavas used to live. In due courseeight more cities came alive adjacent toIndraprastha: Lal Kot,
Siri,Dinpanah,QuilaRaiPithora,Ferozabad,Jahanpanah,TughlakabadandShahjahanabad.
Delhihasbeenawitnesstothepoliticalturmoilforoverfivecenturies.ItwasruledbytheMughalsin
successiontoKhiljisandTughlaqs.
ThehistoryofDelhiisasinterestingandasgrandasthecityitself.Itwasnotsinceitsinceptionthat
Delhi got the status of a capital city. However, because of its strategic location, it always counted
amongstthemajorandimportantcities.Itisbelievedthatthecitywasfirstformedaround1450BC,at
thesiteoftheOldFort,astheroyalfortressofIndraprastha,thecapitalofPandavas.Thereafterwas
formed,thecityofLalKotorQuilaRaiPithoraintheyear1060AD,byRajputTomaras.Sitedatthe
QutubMinar-Mehraulicomplex,itwasfurtherexpandedbyRajputkingPrithvirajChauhan.
ThehistoryofDelhitakesusfurthertothecityofSiribuiltin1304AD,byAlauddinKhiljinearHauz
KhasandGulmoharPark.In1320s,Ghiyas-ud-dinTughlaqbuiltthecityofTughlaqabadnearQutab
Minar complex. The rulers of Tughlaq dynasty kept on building their empire in Delhi by further
founding Jahanpanah and Ferozabad, in the 14th century. After Tughlaqs, came Humayun who
constructed Dilli Sher Shahi (Shergarh), around the Old Fort area, in 1530s. The history of Delhi
continued with the city of Shahjahanabad thatwasbuilt by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahanin the mid
17thcentury,stillknownastheOldDelhi.
The citywas also thefocal pointforthe first war ofindependence in1857.New Delhi historyand
origindatesbacktothe1920s,afteritwasdecidedtoshifttheseatofpowerfromCalcuttatoDelhiin
DelhiDurbarof1911.TheentireareaofConnaughtPlaceandRajpathcameintoexistencethenonly.
EachandeveryeraofDelhihasleftremindersoftheirexistence.Fromthe3gatesofQuilaRaiPithora
totheruinsofTughlaqabadtotheOldfortofShahjahanabad,weareremindedofthehistoryofDelhi
throughthevariousremainsandmonumentsthatstandproudlyonitssoil.

ROHINI-RohiniisknownasoneoftheoldestSubCitiesofDelhithatwasestablishedover20
yearsago.ItisaresidentialsubcitysituatedinNorthWestDelhiDistrictandalsoknownasthe
second largest sub city in Asia after Dwarka Sub City that is situated in the South-West
DelhiDistrict.
Rohinisubcityisdividedintomorethan50SectorsofwhichSector3isthebiggestSectorand
Sector2isthesmallestSector.

The local climate of the region falls under the category of composite climate. The average annual
rainfall is 714mm, three-fourth of which fall in July, august and September. During the summer

VEGITATION

The vegetation of the rohini comprises of small and medium sizes plants and shrubs.As far as the
plain region of Delhi is concerned, it is characterized by shisham trees. The region is known for its
variedfloweringplants.Weedsandgrassgrowonvacantlands.Thelandbeingfertileisalsousedfor
thefarmingofwheat&mustard.Thesitehaseighttrees.

SOIL TYPE

Thesoiloftheregionisalluvialsoilandveryrich&fertileinnature.Thesoilissoftinnatureandhas
sufficientbearingcapacity.Hencethesoilisverygoodforconstruction.

linenearthevillagebarwalaandconnectingwiththegridlinethrough66kvand11kvsub-stations,
therequirementofabout400mvelectricitybemetforthisarea.
