Neglecting to teach social studies can lead to a lack of knowledge that all US citizens should know in this country. Neglecting to make time for social studies will put our students behind. Lets change neglect, into prepare! CIVIL COMPETENCE This is a large concept, meaning it may take some time to teach. MAKE THAT TIME! Prepare students for what is out there upon graduation, even in elementary school. We must start somewhere! SOCIAL STUDIES & LANGUAGE ARTS Dedicated reading time Magazines, novels, current event articles, bell ringer activities Knowledge is power, and knowledge cannot come without literature. READREADREAD C-3 MINI LESSON #1 (3RD GRADE) D2.Eco.2.3-5. Identify positive and negative incentives that influence the decisions people make. Bell ringer: Discuss amongst your table partners whether or not you think working towards earning a pizza party is a positive incentive or a negative incentive. Be sure to have a speaker ready to defend your tables stand! Activity: Hand out article from some current even from recent days, relevant to the students lives. Ex.) recent Grammy nominations, celebrity mistakes, etc. Have each student pick out a word or phrase within the article that represents either positive or negative incentive on the topic. Proceed to have students share taking assessments on the different words/phrases chosen. Closing: Conclude with referring back to your standard, as well as tying in how well positive incentives can work is properly proposed in a situation. C-3 MINI LESSON #2 (3RD GRADE) D2.Geo.4.3-5. Explain how culture influences the way people modify and adapt to their environments. Bell ringer: Assign each table a country. (Africa, Europe, USA, etc.) Working with table partners, come up with a list of 10 things about the culture of your country, yes you may use your phones or chrome books to research your country. Be prepared to share your ten things. Activity: Point out the major differences between the cultures that have been discussed, and show students that even though our cultures may differ so greatly, we are all human beings that wake up, work for some cause or purpose each day, and then sleep at some point to recharge. Closing: Have students write a half page (or more if they choose) on their thoughts on culture. Did they know culture differed so greatly throughout the different parts of the world? Is there any particular culture they would like to experience personally? C-3 MINI LESSON #3 (3RD GRADE) D2.His.3.3-5. Generate questions about individuals and groups who have shaped significant historical changes and continuities. Bell ringer: Table 1-Jackie Robinson Table 2-MLK Table 3-Hariet Tubman Table 4-Frederick Douglas Table 5-Jim Crow With your tables Influential African American Leader, research them, come up with a list of facts you feel is most important. Activity: Discuss amongst your table groups what you think life may have been like for your leader in their time. Come up with a list of questions that if your leader were to walk through the door today, you would like to ask them. Closing: Discuss that immense differences in lifestyles that vary among the 5 leaders we have discussed today. Ensure that without these leaders, our world would not be as it is today. Promote the idea that we must all strive to be leaders in our own sense, and hope to better the world in our own little way.
