Course Outline - Objectives

On completion of this subject, students are expected


(i) to consolidate their
knowledge in calculus and to have skills to
solve applied calculus problems,
(ii) to understand the basic concept of functions with two independent
variables, the limit of a
function with two variables, partial and total
differential of a function with two variables;
(iii) to understand the concepts of sequences
and series, vector and analytic geometry;
(iv) to be able to apply the concepts in engineering applications.
Course Outline - Syllabus

Syllabus: Mathematics review. Real number system. Cartesian product. Function and
their graphs. Limit of a function and continuous function.
The derivative theorem (the chain rule, implicit differentiation, higher order derivatives
and applications of the derivatives).
The integral (the definite integral, the indefinite integral, applications of the integral on
the Cartesian coordinates and polar coordinates).
Variables in a function. Functions with two independent variables.
Limit of a function at a point. Characteristics of continuous and discontinuous
functions.
Partial derivative at a point. Total differential at a point and its applications. Maximum
and minimum points of a function and the applications with Lagrange multipliers. Area
and volume with double integration. Sequences and series, convergence and power
series.

Calculus in Engineering
What is engineering?
Engineering is a discipline that deals with the art or science of applying scientific
knowledge to solve practical problems, usually in the areas of commerce and industry.

Scientists ask the why of a question, then research the answer;


in contrast, engineers want to know how to solve the problem and then how to
implement the solution. But its not always easy to separate the two. Often a scientist
has to use engineering basics (such as building special equipment for research), and
engineers often have to do scientific research.

The word engineer (as well as engine) developed from the Latin root ingeniosus
(skilled); in some languages, such as Arabic, the word for engineering also means
geometry.
Calculus in Engineering
What types of mathematics are used in
engineering?
Mathematics is definitely a necessity in engineering, especially the fields of
algebra,
geometry, calculus, and statistics.
Certain divisions of engineering rely on variations of mathematics, including
combinations of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, differential equations,
probability and statistics, complex analysis, and others.
civil engineers use a great deal of linear algebra and work with matrices.
Mechanical engineers use logs and exponents, calculus, differential equations, and
probability and statistics.
chemical engineer uses such mathematics as algebra
and geometry, logs and exponents, integral calculus, and differential equations.
Architecture uses trigonometry, symmetry, metric, etc to create strong artistic
structures.
Electrical Engineering: abstract math is used in communication and signal processing.
Complex differential equations are used in circuit theory and systems design; also in
circuit theory, engineers need to know algebra and trigonometry.

Sets, what is set?

What is set? Is a collection of objects is set?

Natural numbers - (counting): 1, 2, 3, 4,

Rational Numbers - (length, weight, voltage, etc): p/q , p,q integers, q neq
