Nouns vs Verbs in ASL

Many nouns and verbs are shared in ASL, the


difference between a NOUN and a VERB is
MORPHOLOGICAL.
Noun/Verb pairs were first analyzed by Supalla
& Newport (1978)
The Noun & Verb have the same
HANDSHAPE, LOCATION, and
ORIENTATION BUT the MOVEMENT changes
Noun- repeat movement
Verb- hold movement

InAmerican Sign Language,


personalpronouns(me, she/he, you, us,
them) can indicate possession by
changing the handshape from an index
finger to a flat hand (a version of a "b"
palm). The palm should face toward the
person or thing that is doing the
possessing.
Pronouns in ASL

Pronouns in ASL have several unique features:


Indexing- pointing to a location to indicate a
pronoun
Referent- establishing a name sign for a noun
Number- Classifiers used to distinguish group
membership number
