FINAL YEAR
INTRODUCTIO
N
The scarcity and availability at reasonable rates of sand and aggregate .
Banning of excavation of Natural aggregates.
Huge environmental problems:
Contamination of water
Landslides
Sound Pollution due to Blasting
Air Pollution due to Grinding
Best way to overcome this problem :
Find alternate aggregates for construction in place of conventional natural
aggregates.
Use of Rubber tires
JUSTIFICATION of USING RUBBER TYRES

Discarded tyres are potential threat to the environment.

Fire hazards.
Breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
Rapid depletion of available sites for waste disposal.
TYPES OF RUBBER TYRE :

TWO TYPES

CAR TYRES TRUCK TYRES

BROAD CATAGORIES OF DISCARDED TYRES

CHIPPED RUBBER CRUMB RUBBER ASH RUBBER

RUBBER TYRE AS CONCRETE AGGREGATE :

Recycled tyre rubber in concrete might improve the weak characteristics

of concrete like- low tensile strength, low ductility, low energy absorption, and
shrinkage and cracking associated with hardening and curing .

For the purpose of using it as aggregate the rubber tyres are first cut
into pieces. There are two major processing categories of rubber size reduction .

(i)Mechanical grinding

(ii)Cryogenic reduction
METHODOLOGY OF MAKING RUBBER AGGREGATE
CONCRETE :

Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) 43-Grade as per IS: 456-2000 Compressive

strength: 7- Days = 18 N/mm2, 28- days = 36 N/mm2.
Rubber from tyre is then cut into sizes of 20-10 mm, 10-4.75 mm which used as
replacement for natural aggregates.
These pieces were cleaned with soap water and rinse with clean water. After
drying under sun at open place, these pieces were then cut as per the grading.
The fresh mortar mixtures were prepared using proportions of (1: 2: 3) by weight
for cement, sand, and rubber aggregate respectively for all mixtures used in this
study.
During mixing one treated material, Carbon Tetrachloride (CCl4) is used for
treatment the ground waste tire rubber to improve the interface friction between
rubber particles and cement matrix to improve the bonding between rubber &
cement.
Many of cubes will be moulded in steel cubes of dimensions 100x100x100 mm
for compressive strength.
These moulds are finally kept for final setting time for about 24 hours.
After final setting time, the rubberized concrete blocks are carefully released
from the moulds.
Observe the finish of concrete block and its corners for any damage sign.
These now kept for curing for the required number of days (3, 7 or 28).
After curing these are tested for the Compressive strength in Compression
Testing Machine (CTM).
All results are then collected and compared with the ordinary strength of
concrete.
EXPECTED CONCLUSION :

Compressive strength decreases as the percent of waste crumb tire

replacement increases.
Slump test results decreases as the percent of waste crumb tire
replacement increases.
Density decreases as the percent of waste crumb tire
replacement increases.
Water absorption decreases as the percent of waste crumb tire
replacement increases.
