the effects of reinforcement particles on the
machining performance of Al-MMCs. The SiC
particles average size is 6 18m. The
experiments were carried out using a bar turning
process under dry conditions.
Tamer et al. [42] worked on experimental
investigation on mechanical and machinability
properties of silicon carbide particle (SiCp)
reinforced aluminium metal matrix composite.
The influence of reinforced ratios of 5, 10 and 15
wt. % of SiCp on mechanical properties was
examined.
Feng et al. [32] investigated on nanostructured
composite powder consisting of an Al-5083 matrix
reinforced with approximately 6.5 vol. % nano-sized
SiC particles (25 nm in size) was synthesized via
cryomilling.
Two bulk composites made from 100% of the
composite powder and a blend of the composite
powder with 50 wt.% conventional coarse-grained
(unmilled) Al-5083 powder, respectively, were
fabricated with HIP-consolidation and hot rolling
process.

Omyma El-Kady and A. Fathy [33], the effect of SiC

particle size and its amount on both physical and
mechanical properties of Al matrix composite were
investigated.
Kainer [36] studies primarily focused on the use of
micro-sized reinforcements or low volume fractions (<
2 Vol. %) of nano-sized reinforcements, mostly in
aluminum matrix.
it is revealed that the composites reinforced with
nano-sized particles exhibit better properties than
those reinforced with micro-sized reinforcements.
Nano-reinforcements can remarkably increase the
mechanical strength by effectively promoting particle
hardening mechanisms.

Hafizpour et al. [38] examined the compressibility

behaviour of AlSiC Nano composite powders and the
density-pressure data were analysed by linear and
non-linear compaction equations.

Kollo et al. [35] studied High-energy milling for the
ex situ strengthening of aluminium with silicon carbide
(SiC) Nano powders. Heptane was used as a milling

differences in the resulting powders, effective
dispersion of the nano SiC was achieved.

mill to produce aluminum (Al) matrix composite
powders reinforced with silicon carbide (SiC). To clarify
the role of particle size of SiC on lattice strain and
grain size of Al two series of SiC with micron and nano-
size were selected.

and milled at different times (2, 5, and 10 h) to
achieve Al 2.5vol. % SiC and Al 5vol. % SiC
composite powders.

alongside good ductility and low density.
Mechanical Properties of Metal
Matrix Nano Composites
Kollo et al. [35] studied High-energy milling for the
ex situ strengthening of aluminium with silicon
carbide (SiC) Nano powders. Composite samples
compacted by hot pressing showed an increase in
hardness (HV20 = 220) and a decrease in Al
crystallite size from 220 to 55 nm with the nano-SiC
content increasing from 1 up to 20 vol. %.
The ultimate tensile strength was measured for
extruded samples which resulted in 205 MPa (17%
elongation) for 1 vol. % of nano-SiC and a strength of
420 MPa (4% elongation) for 10 vol. % of nano-SiC
reinforcement.
Ferkel, H. and Mordike, B. L. [37] experiments
demonstrated that MMCs with a high volume fraction
of nano-particles exhibit better mechanical
behaviours than those reinforced with micro-sized
particles, and those with low volume fractions of
nano-sized reinforcements.
A fine and uniform dispersion of nano-particles
provides a good balance between the ceramic
strengthened (non-deforming particles) and inter-
particle spacing effects to maximize the yield
strength and creep resistance while retaining good
matrix ductility.
Tamer et al. [42] worked on experimental
investigation on mechanical and machinability
properties of silicon carbide particle (SiCp) reinforced
aluminium metal matrix composite.
Tribological, Microstructure and Corrosion
Properties of Metal Matrix Nano
Composites
Yong et al. [31] presents a new method for an
inexpensive fabrication of bulk lightweight MMNCs with
reproducible microstructures and superior properties
by use of ultrasonic nonlinear effects, namely transient
cavitation and acoustic streaming, to achieve uniform
dispersion of nano-sized SiC particles in molten
aluminum alloy A356.
Microstructural study was carried out with an optical
microscope, SEM, EDS mapping, and XPS. It validates a
good dispersion of nano-sized SiC in metal matrix.
It also indicates that partial oxidation of SiC nano
particles results in the formation of SiO2 in the matrix.
Feng et al. [32] investigated on nano structured
composite powder consisting of an Al-5083 matrix
reinforced with approximately 6.5 vol. % nano-sized
SiC particles (25 nm in size) was synthesized via
cryomilling.
Microstructural investigation showed that the nano-
sized SiC particles had been dispersed homogeneously
in the reinforced regions in the composites and the
grain size of the Al-5083 matrix in the reinforced
regions ranged from 100 to 200 nm.
Omyma El-Kady and A. Fathy [33], the effect of SiC
particle size and its amount on both physical and
mechanical properties of Al matrix composite were
investigated. SiC of particle size 70 nm, 10 m and 40
m and Al powder of particle size 60 m were used.
Phase composition and microstructure were
characterized. Relative density, thermal conductivity,
hardness and compression strength were studied. The
results showed that the X-ray diffraction (XRD)
analysis indicated that the dominant components
were Al and SiC. Densification and thermal
conductivity of the composites decreased with
increasing the amount of SiC and increased with
increasing SiC particle size. Scanning electron
microscope (SEM) studies showed that the distribution
of the reinforced particle was uniform.
Saberi et al. [39] investigated on high energy ball mill
to produce aluminum (Al) matrix composite powders
reinforced with silicon carbide (SiC).
To clarify the role of particle size of SiC on lattice strain
and grain size of Al two series of SiC with micron and
nano-size were selected.
The produced composites were investigated using X-
ray diffraction pattern (XRD) to elucidate the role of
particle size, secondary phase content and milling time
on grain size and lattice strain of Al matrix.
Harish et al. [44] studied the literature review on
machining of hybrid Aluminium Metal Matrix composite
(Al/SiC/Gr and Al/Si10Mg/Fly ash/Gr).
These hybrid MMCs can easily be machined by EDM
and a good surface quality can be obtained by
controlling the machining parameters.
These Aluminium Metal Matrix composites with
multiple reinforcements (hybrid MMCs) are finding
increased applications because of improved
mechanical and Tribological properties and hence are
better substitutes for single reinforced composites.
These materials are developed for bushes, bearings
and cylinder liners in cast Aluminium engine blocks.
Ashok et al. [52] investigated and optimized the
tribological performance parameters of Al-6061T6
alloy reinforced with SiC (15% by weight) and Al2O3
(15% by weight) particulates having particle size of
37m each has been presented.
The wear and frictional properties of the hybrid metal
matrix composites have been studied by performing
dry sliding wear test using pin-on-disc wear tester.
A L27 orthogonal array is selected for the analysis of
the data. From the test results it is observed that
sliding distance has the significant contribution in
controlling the friction and wear behaviour of hybrid
composites. A confirmation test is also carried out to
verify the accuracy of the results obtained through the
optimization. In addition an optical micrograph test is
also performed on the wear tracks to study the wear
mechanism.
