Vocabulary
Building Information Models -- or
Modeling (BIM): Models of project product,
focus on design
Virtual Design and Construction (VDC):
Models of project Product (i.e., facilities), Work Processes and
Organization
Intent, form (design choices), behavior (predicted, observed)
BIM a subset of VDC

GSA National 3D-4D BIM Program
BIM Overview
3D geometric models
Geometric representation of building components and
typically serve as an aid for visualization and
design/construction coordination.
4D models (3D + time)
Include information which can inform and analyze project
phasing, tenant sequencing, and construction scheduling.
BIM models include not only 3D geometric models (and,
therefore, 2D and 3D drawings), but also more specific
product information on a wide range of building elements
and systems associated with a proposed building
GSA National 3D-4D BIM Program

For all major projects funded in October 2007

and beyond, GSA will require spatial program
BIMs be the minimum requirements for
submission for Final Concept approvals by the
PBS Commissioner and the Chief Architect.
