PADANG

EARTHQUAKE
September 30th, 2009
Padang city is located in west side of Sumatra island

Sumatra island is at the boundary between two tectonic plates which


are Indian / Australian plate and Eurasian Plate.
The two plates meet on the ocean floor at
the plate boundary which is about 200 km
(125 miles) off the western shore of Sumatra
and about 5 km (3 miles) below the ocean
surface

The plate boundary is called the Sumatran


Subduction Trench, and it is where the
Indian/Australian plate is slowly descending
beneath the continental Eurasian plate at a
rate of about 4.5 cm/year (2 inches/year).
The earthquake affected areas

earthquake was expected to be widely left, not
only along the Padang Pariaman coastal trip, but
also from offshore Mentawai island in the west to
inland Sumatra (Pekanbaru) in the east
On September 30th, 2009 the 7,5
Mw earthquake struck Padang
city at 17:16 local time

The earthquake occurred not far


off the western coast of Sumatra,
between Padang city and the
coastal town of Pariaman

The epicentre was 60 km west-


north-west of Padang and its
focus was at a depth of 81 km
Damage after earthquake

More than 1.100 people were killed and over 2.900 people injured
The earthquake caused significant damage to public buildings and offices as
well as to about 140.000 houses.
The earthquake affected 250.000 families through the total or partial loss of
their homes and livelihoods.

The damage of the earthquake is also make a landslide affected in some location
in West Sumatra
