Q1
In what ways does your media product use,
develop or challenge forms and conventions of
real media products?
My The start of my film trailer consists of an EXCU
(extreme close up) to portray the emotion within
the characters eyes. In recent horror trailers that
vid I have researched, like The Forest, there are
many EXCUS of the actors faces. The
camerawork is vital towards an audience as the
producers want to make sure that the audience
know exactly how much fear/sorrow/content etc.
The Forest that the character holds. This is a stereotypical
convention.

My The stereotypical accident (that happens in

every horror film to build a climax) within my
horror trailer is rather countertypical as I
vid have made it take place during daylight. In
most circumstances it happens at night-time
in a typical dark atmosphere (just like in
The forest where she is seeing things during
late eve). However, I have used stereotypical
The Forest elements within this screenshot as I edited
the lighting to be red, which connotes danger
a factor that is used in ALL films to convey a
dangerous scene.
Another stereotypical convention within my trailer is my
use of a voice over. The trailers I researched (Mama, The
Forest, The Woman in Black) all have a voice over added
to them, so that the audience are narrated and told what
is happening in a small amount of time. However, my
over voice has a potential countertypical side to it, as I
literally show the voice speaking to the audience, using a
darker lighting to connote an eerie feel to the shot
(stereotypical). I wanted my story to stand out even more
and for the audience to recognise which of the characters
is telling the story.

A very countertypical convention to my

horror film trailer is the time lapse that
I included. I took numerous videos of
my characters in different positions
around the room and then put them all
together, darkening the lighting as each
new shot appears, to make it seem like
time has dragged on. I did this to
develop tension, not only for the
characters, but for the audience as they
have just hit a body and are dwelling
upon what to do after their hit n run.
The trailers I researched did not involve
this element therefore I felt good due to
Another stereotypical convention within my trailer is
the use of lighting. Firstly, dark to connote evilness
or something unwanted (aka the man watching the
My Vid teenagers on cctv). Secondly, the use of black and
white lighting on the screensconnoting evil vs.
innocent (as black conveys death and white
portrays purity).
Within my research, I came across many shots of
dark lighting within horror films and a few black
and white elements in between. I thought this
particular lighting was effective, from a watching
audience perspective, as it made the atmosphere of
MAMA the action spookier and therefore scarier.

The Forest

Another aspect of lighting within my

video is mixing the colours green and
red together. Yes, the red is
stereotypical and represents danger.
However, the green is very
countertypical. Green is the most
restful colour for the human eye,
therefore putting my audience at ease
whilst feeling scared. It also suggests
stability and endurance, something I
added to portray how I want my video
to come acrossstrong!
A shot of the actual monster is also sometimes crucial as
My vid you want the audience to know what theyre letting
themselves in for. This shot of a man all in white (butchers
outfit) is put in front of a dark background. The is a clear
contrast however links back to my stereotypical evil vs.
innocent elementwhich is what I wanted to show my
audienceas the story consists of teenagers being chased
by evil. Within MAMA there are many shots of the
monster and limited shots in The Woman in Black trailer.
I decided to show my villain quite a lot as it makes the
audience fear them morewanting them to come and
watch the main film as horror junkies enjoy being scared.

TWIB

MAMA

Lastly, at the end of my trailer I

have very stereotypically
involved credits! Every trailer I
researched involved these (I
dont feel it necessary to
screenshot as it is an obvious
factor to a trailer). However, I
put mine in black and white to
again, re emphasize the
Actors names, always shown on a poster to advertise who
is in it. I made the font white to show the purity in the
characters that these actors are playing. I made the font
glow red to portray the danger that the characters
surround themselves in.
The title is in exactly the same colours as the main actors
namespurely for the same reason! A title is CRUCIAL on a
film poster as the audience want to know what the film is
called. I chose this font for the title as other horror film
posters that I researched had scraggy and unusual fonts. I
believe the scratchy title font conveys the messiness of the
storyline.
This shadow of a person with a knife conveys the goriness and
danger of the actions taking place within the film. The shadows are
black to connote death and are coming from either side to depict
that nobody is safe and danger is all around.

The corridor connotes cramped spacerelating to where the

victims are held during the film. I want the audience to get a
claustrophobic feeling whilst looking at this poster as an
uncomfortable feeling is ideal for a horror film.

The figures of the villains within the film are idealistic to

show so that the audience know what/who features within
the film. They are wearing white so that during the film, any
blood split will be easily noticed on their clothingmaking
their appearance scarier. The red flare behind them signifies
the danger that surrounds these characters.
The blood splats are there purely to depict death and hurt for
the audience. The blood splats show that this is going to be a
gory horror genre convention.

The five star rating makes the film look good in the viewers eyes
and would draw them more into watching it. I have written the
quote in red so that it fits in with the rest of the poster
aesthetically. Most of the posters that I researched had movie critic
reviews on as one opinion can sometimes mean everything to
some people.

The poster credits have the same

colours as the title and film actors
(for the same reasonsread
above) so that the poster looks

audience may want to know or see
who has been working behind the
scenes of the movie.
White font to stand out over the black background. I have put
the word horrific in red to make it stand out (as that word
links to my genre) and the red connotation links to the word.

Title is vital! I took the title from a very popular magazine, the
worlds biggest movie magazine (as stated in a small font on the
front to attract audiences). The title is in a large font so that the
consumer remembers the magazine that provided them with great
information and will therefore be an ongoing customer. The title is
in red as red is known to stand out and also connote blood, danger
and gorewhich links in with my horror magazine genre.

Photo of my villains in the new out coming horror movie.

This gives the reader a taster of what type of film it is!
(Horror/Gore due to the knife belts being worn). In other
EMPIRE magazines they always involve/include their film
characters on the front of the magazine as it is a visual
way of portraying the actors involved and sometimes
emotions that are experienced. (Hence the worried look on
my main characters face on the front). The villains are
stood in a doorway, blocking the light from shining
through. This is a representation that the antagonists in my
film block anything content coming into the scenes and
that they create darkness throughout.
General quotes as seen on every magazine I researched! E.g.
Empire The end is Nigh & Total Film A decade in the making.
I have made the font red due to the connotations stated above,
white so that it stands out against the dark background and black
as this colour connotes death, evil and unwanteda perfect link to
my horror element. This applies to all fonts used! Some of the
fonts have a glow around themused for an aesthetically pleasing
affect and also to emphasize the word!

My main character is put on the front of the magazine cover (for

reasons discussed above). I have executed half of the lighting on
his face which conveys that he is surrounded by darkness
throughout most of the film. This also reinforces the factor of my
antagonists blocking out any light coming through and only
bringing darkness.
My character is wearing greyanother morbid colour which
portrays that he is a dull moving character and has no joyfulness
within him in this new film! Most horror films exclude any content
from characters as it sets the scene into a darker atmosphere if
the characters are all downcast and miserable.

EVERY magazine has a standout title, hence my play on

horror pun gore blimey. This would hopefully grab the
readers eye and make them want to purchase the
magazine as there may be more witty info inside the
issue.
