 Brief history

The birth of INTERNET is intimly

attached to the building effort
campaign of highways made by
the American Government in the
early fifties.
 What they intended:

That the militars could travel fast

to any city under enemy attack.

If one city was attacked and

destroyed, the impact in the suply
net was minimum.
 What they intended:

To create an information
superhigway

If one of the supercomputers of

this net was destroyed, the net
should continue working.
 ARPA

And so the defense counsel of the

united states created ARPA
(Advanced Research Projects
Agency).
But with the end of the war this
project was abandoned.
 The evolution of the
Internet
In 1969, the universities took over
the ARPA project, they connected
four computers located in
Universities all across the country,
and the ARPAnet was created.
In the next years this net didnt
stop growing.

And the defense counsel of the united
states created a new project MILnet, it
was suppose to keep some classified
information, but not considered Top-
Secret, they attached it to the ARPAnet.

In 1986, um outro organismo

governamental americano, a NSF
National Science Foundation, criou uma
rede de 5 computadores a que chamou
NSFnet.

E quando em 1991 Al Gore faz o

seu clebre discurso sobre as auto
estradas da informao, os termos
Information SuperHighway e
Internet entram para o vocabulrio
comum.

Em 1994 havia cerca de 20 milhes

de pessoas "ligadas" internet e
crescia razo de 100.000 novos
utilizadores por ms.

Hoje ningum se atreve a estimar

o nmero de utilizadores da net.
