Code Compliant
Power Systems Objectives, Constraints, &
Considerations

Objectives

To comply with all applicable codes and standards.

To meet the specified power and communications requirements of other
systems and equipment.
To achieve reliability and durability of systems and components.
To implement safety and protection measures for people and equipment.

The overall design objective is to provide maximum reliability, flexibility, and

continuity of service and to meet these objectives with the lowest
investment costs that satisfy system requirements.

Power Systems- Incoming Service Dual Feeding
The incoming service is a 115kV supply
from the Saudi Electrical Company.
Currently arranged as a single supply.
There are advantages to a second
feeder if taken from a different 115kV
sub-station supply
Saudi Electrical Company have
identified the cost of a second supply
as 55 Million Riyals

Reliability data on supplies in the

region is being collated with a view to
making a recommendation on the
second service.
Note that the KKMC hospital is
provided with on-site emergency
generation.

115 & 13.8kV Vacuum

Switchgear
SF66

Both types are almost maintenance free (hermetically

sealed for life)

Very little difference in performance

Recommended use of surge arrestors in high inrush

applications for Vacuum quenching

Modern SF6 and vacuum circuit-breakers are sealed for life;

diagnostic systems for
the purpose of measuring the gas pressure or the vacuum
level are
therefore unnecessary.

Middle East market currently weighted in favour of SF6.

Power Systems- Generator sets
Recommendation for KKMC

2 Options 2MVA sets (20 number)

2MVA sets (20 number)

Resilience:
Less generation capacity loss in event of failure

Cost :
The 5 MVA set would necessarily be a medium speed solution = limited choice (this platform is
inherently more expensive from a capex standpoint).
The 2 MVA set is a high speed platform and with multiple suppliers the customer has considerable
choice and consequently
a much lower price.

Availability :
The high speed platform ( 2 MVA) is typically available ex factory 12-16 weeks, the 5 MVA set
would have a delivery in excess of 24-32 weeks.

Size : The 5 MVA set occupies approx. 30 % extra space due to large civil foundations.

Response time for emergency use : both sets can meet the response time of 10 - 15 seconds from
start to load acceptance.

Maintenance requirements :
the time before overhaul for a standby application is largely irrelevant however there is approx. a 1: 2
ratio on overhauls.
A 5 MVA set would come up for major overhaul in 40,000 hrs against 20,000 hrs for a 2 MVA. this
difference is today mitigated
by providing
