INTRODUCTION

Noise is defined as unwanted sound. Excessive or persistent noise may

cause annoyance, speech interference and hearing damage
Noise may lead to several physiological disorders like high blood pressure,
heart problems, head ache etc.
Vibration is caused by unbalanced inertial forces and moments. Resonant
vibrations may lead to fatigue failure.
Excessive vibration and noise characterize all rotating, reciprocating and
flow machinery.
The control of noise from vibrating bodies at the involves control of
vibration.
LITERATURE REVIEW
NOISE AND VIBRATION:
Noise is defined as unwanted sound and the vibration is the produce by
mechanical component such as rotating part , sliding part oscillation is
produce on the component at a point.

CLASSIFICATION OF NOISE:
CAUSES OF NOISE AND VIBRATION IC
ENGINE
Knocking :- A thudding sound will be heard from the increasing .High rate
pressure rise is equivalent to a sudden increase in load on the engine structure.

Bearing knock faults in IC engine:- especially the big-end bearing damage,

due to friction and wear accounts for and leads to a Therefore bearing
damage, especially the big-end bearing damage, due to friction and wear
accounts for and leads to a signicant portion of Internal Combustion
engine failure.
Piston Scuffing faults in IC engine :-
Scuffing is gross damage in which local welds are form between the
sliding surfaces.
Control methods of noise and vibration in IC
engine :-
. Engine mechanical noise reduction:.
Die-cast, aluminum pistons will have Moly-Kote (R) coating backed into the skirts The
coating reduces friction, allowing low piston-to-cylinder clearance for quite on.
Fuel Injector cover:
Engine includes a fuel injector with cover, which is both barrier and absorber for
mechanical noise that is primarily perceptible to people outside the vehicle. It is molded
plastic backed by a sound-absorbing pad.
Engine mounts:
Four elastomeric (rubber) mounts are used with all power trains to minimize road
induced shake and to prevent engine vibration from reaching the passenger compartment.
Dampers:
The left axle shaft includes a rubber-isolated tuned mass damper to cancel bending
vibrations for power train noise reduction.
Fuel and exhaust system:
The exhaust system is quieter than before
due to a bellow-type flexible coupling between exhaust
manifold and pipe.
ADVANTAGES OF REDUCING NOISE AND
VIBRATION:
It improves vehicle quality.
Mechanical parts life can be increased
By reducing vibration the pay of is not only comfort but also fuel
economy improvements.
Vehicles weight-saving beef up fuel economy.
Quality drives can be achieved.
Safety and security are also enhanced.
Reduce noise pollutions.
Improves sound quality reduces human fatigue.
Performance, handling and overall styling can be enhanced.
DISADVANTAGES OF INCREASING NOISE AND VIBRATION :

It improves vehicle quality.

Mechanical parts life can be decreased.
Increases noise pollutions.
Performance, handling and overall styling can be reduced
It can damage our hearing and evoke other psychological,
physiological.
CONCLUSION

The objective of this seminar has been to describe some of the recent
technologies to minimize the problem of noise and vibrations. The
selection of proper materials, design structures and using dampers, the
problem of noise and vibrations can be solved. With the use of software
analysis we can accurately predict the noise and vibrations. These are some
of the technical issues but, human efforts are also essential for this.
CASE STUDY
Piston Scuffing faults in IC engine :-
When scuffing faults occurs in the piston and cylinder of an engine, it is
called piston scuffing faults.
EXPERIMENTAL SETUP
OBSERVATION OF EXPERIMENT:
SOLUTION PROCEDURE ON THE PISTON AND CYLINDER
SCUFFING:
Vibration signals of healthy and faulty conditions
COMPARISONS OF HEALTHY AND FAULTY CURVES WITH
DIFFERENT PARAMETERS
RESULT
The vibration signals for healthy and faulty engine conditions
are shown in graph
It is clearly observed that piston scufng fault affected
signicantly the overall engine vibration so that the vibration
amplitude increased substantially.
To see more detailed scufng effects on the engine vibration
and also nd the frequency content caused by this fault, CWT
was employed. The selection of wavelet type is very important
in wavelet transform. This can signicantly affect the
performance of fault diagnosis.
