Rule 1: Give the patient more fluids than usual to prevent dehydration
Give the patient as much fluids until diarrhea stops. After each loose stool, give
100-200 ml (half to 1 cup) of fluids. Suitable fluids includes 2 groups:
Fluids that contain salt:
ORS solution
In 1 L of clean water, add teaspoon of salt and 6 teaspoons of sugar.
Salted drinks
Vegetable or chicken soup with salt
Fluids that do not contain salt:
Plain water
Rice water
Unsweetened tea

Rule 2: Give supplemental zinc (10-20 mg) everyday for 14 days


Rule 3: Continue to feed the patient to prevent malnutrition
Rule 4: Take the patient to healthcare facility if signs of dehydration and
other problems appears.
