MACHINE DRAWING

Working drawings are also known as

production drawings.

They consist of a set of drawings

which completely describes the
shape, size and specifi cations for the
kinds of material, method of fi nish
and accuracy required for the
fabrication of a product.
MACHINE DRAWING (CONTD.)

Working drawings consist of:

Detail drawings
Assembly drawings

A detail drawing is one which provides

complete information for the
production of each part of a machine
or structure.

Each part should normally be produced

on separate sheet.
MACHINE DRAWING (CONTD.)

A good detail drawing should provide:

Shape of the part
Size of the part
Material
Grade of finish
Necessary shop operations
Limits of accuracy
Number of parts required
Number of views or sections required to fully
describe the exact shape of the part.
MACHINE DRAWING (CONTD.)

An assembly drawing is one in which

the complete machine is shown with all
parts assembled in their functional
positions.
The assembly drawing should provide:
One main view to show the best assembly
Selected overall dimensions and important
centre to centre distance
Identification of different parts on assembly
drawing
Necessary sections
Parts list, notes, title, etc.

INTRODUCTION TO AUTODESK
INVENTOR
It is a 3D mechanical engineering, design,
visualization, and simulation software.

It is a parametric feature-based solid

modeling tool which allows conversion of a
2D sketch into a solid model.

It creates digital prototyping as opposed to

physical prototyping (costly and time
consuming) by integrating 2D AutoCAD
drawings and 3D data into a single digital
model.
INTRODUCTION TO AUTODESK
INVENTOR (CONTD.)
It can quickly and easily create renderings,
animations, and presentations that improve
communication.

It can generate and share production-ready

drawings for manufacturing teams.

Models can be changed easily.

It has a simulation environment that allows

motion simulation, static and modal fi nite
element analysis (FEA) of parts, assemblies, and
load-bearing frames.

FILE TYPES

Project fi les
Autodesk Inventor uses projects to identify
folders that contain files unique to a design
project and folders that contain library files
referenced by a design project.
Extension is .ipj
To assure that links between files work
properly, add the locations for folders to the
project file before working on model files.
You can have as many projects as needed to
manage your work.
FILE TYPES (CONTD.)

Part files
Part files contain the drawings of
individual parts of an assembly.
A part file must contain the drawing of
only one part.
The file extension is .ipt
FILE TYPES (CONTD.)

Drawing fi les
Drawing files contain the 2D drawings of a drawn
item: whether a part or an assembly.
It is linked to respective fi les and the extension
is .idw or .dwg

Assembly fi les
Assembly files contain the assembled model and is
linked to the part fi les. The extension is .iam

Presentation fi les
Shows an animation video of the assembly of
parts. The extension is .ipn

CREATING SKETCHES

Sketches are created in a similar

manner as done in AutoCAD software.
The dimensions/size may not be fi xed
as the sketch is drawn.
Make the shape drawn as close as
possible to the desired shape.
The sizes are applied by using the
dimension command/tool located in
the constrain panel.

CREATING SKETCHES THE DRAW
PANEL
Locate the previous drawing created from the
last class.

Click on Create 2D Sketch

Click on any line on the previous sketch
ALTERNATIVELY
Double click on Sketch 1 in the browser

Locate the Draw panel in the ribbon opened

by the Sketch tab
CREATING SKETCHES THE DRAW
PANEL

The draw panel consists of tools for drawing

lines, circles, arcs, rectangles, ellipses,
splines, polygons, etc.

Hover your pointer on any of the tools in the

panel: A quick help on the use of the tool is
provided.
CREATING SKETCHES THE DRAW
PANEL
DRAW PANEL CIRCLE

The Circle tool contains

two options

Centre point which allows

you to specify the centre
point and locate the radius.

Tangent which requires

that you specify three lines
to which a circle should be
tangential.
DRAW PANEL ARC

The Arc tool contains three options

Three point which requires that you

specify the start and end point of the
arc and a point on the circumference.

Tangent which produces an arc

tangent to another geometry.

Center point allows you specify the

center of the arc with its start and
end points.
DRAW PANEL RECTANGLE

The Rectangle tool contains

two options

Two point which allows you to

specify the start point and the
diagonal which defines the
width and the height of
rectangle.

Three point which allows for

the specification of the width
and length of the rectangle.
DRAW PANEL FILLET AND
CHAMFER
Fillet tool is used to create a
round or curve at a specifi ed
corner or intercept between
two lines.

Chamfer tool is used to create

a chamfer at a corner or
intercept between two lines.

Other tools on the Draw panel can (and

should) be exploited
CREATING SKETCHES CONSTRAIN
PANEL
Constraints are automatically added as the
sketch progresses depending on how accurate
the sketch was produced.

Constraints give the relativity of lines and

curves and eliminates the degree of freedom
(i.e. limits the coordinates in which the item
can move).

It is advisable to apply geometric constraints

before dimensions so that the shape is less
likely to be distorted.
CONSTRAIN PANEL

Coincident Constraint
Constrains points to other geometries.

Parallel Constraint
Causes selected geometry to lie parallel to
each other.

Tangent
Constrains curves to be tangential to other
curves or features.
CONSTRAIN PANEL

Collinear Constraint
Causes two or more line segments to lie on
the same line.

Perpendicular Constraint
Causes selected geometry to lie
perpendicular to each other.

Smooth
Applies a curvature continuous condition to a
spline.
CONSTRAIN PANEL

Concentric Constraint
Causes two arcs, circles or ellipses to have
the same center.

Horizontal Constraint
Causes lines to lie parallel to the x-axis of the
drawing plane/sketch coordinate system.

Symmetric
Constrains lines or curves to be symmetric
about a selected line.
CONSTRAIN PANEL

Fix
Fixes points and curves in position relative to
sketch coordinate system

Vertical Constraint
Causes lines to lie parallel to the y-axis of the
drawing plane/sketch coordinate system.

Equal
Constrains selected circles and arcs to the
same radius; and selected lines to the same
length
EXAMPLE

It is advisable that
your sketch is fully
constrained to avoid
any change in
dimension by means
of an unintended
action/click of the
mouse.

See the bottom right

corner to see if your
sketch is fully
constrained.

CREATING SOLID PARTS/MODELS

Creating a solid model can be visualized as fabricating the

item on the production fl oor or in the workshop where
activities like welding, chiseling/carving, drilling, boring
and so on, can be carried out.

It is important to know the processes that will get you the

model accurately and fastest.

All solid models evolve from 2D sketches. Hence, it is

important to produce a relevant sketch and then utilize the
tools in the CREATE panel to produce the required 3D
model.

Tools in the MODIFY panel contain tools such as the hole,

fi llet, chamfer. Other tools in other panels may be
explored.
