Syllabus:
Introduction: Types of building, components of a building,
design loads, framed structure and load bearing wall structure.
Foundations: Shallow foundation and deep foundation, site
exploration, bearing capacity of soil, standard penetration test.
Brick masonry: Types of brick, bonds in brickwork, supervision
of brickwork, brick laying tools, defects and strength on brick
masonry, typical structures in brickwork, load bearing and non-
load bearing walls, cavity walls, partition walls.

Introduction
Syllabus:
Lintels and arches: Different types of lintels and
arches, loading on lintels, construction of arches.
Stairs: Different types of stairs.
Floors: Ground floors and upper floors; roofs and
roof coverings.
Formwork
Plastering and interior finishing; pointing
Painting; distempering and white washing.

Introduction
Building can be defined as a structure broadly
consisting of walls, floors and roofs, founded to
provide covered space for different uses such as
residence, education, business, manufacturing,
storage, hospitalization, entertainment, worship etc.

Introduction
The method adopted for construction and choice of
material to be used in the building depends upon a
number of factors like character of occupancy,
location of site, climate, local materials and funds
available.
Normally all buildings are constructed according to
drawings and specifications prepared by building
engineers and architect.

Each area has prescribe building byelaws (building code e.g.
Bangladesh National Building Code BNBC) to which buildings
must confirm building details.

Types of Building: Depending upon the characteristics of


occupancy or the type of use buildings are classified as:
1. Residential buildings
2. Education buildings
3. Institutional buildings
4. Assembly buildings
5. Business buildings
6. Mercantile buildings
7. Industrial building
8. Storage buildings
9. Hazardous buildings

1. Residential buildings: These shall include one or two
private dwellings, apartment houses (flats),
dormitories, hotels etc.
2. Education buildings: These shall be include any
building used for school, college or day-care
purposes involving assembly for instruction,
education or recreation.

3. Institutional buildings: These shall include any
building or part of a building which is used for
purposes such as medical or other treatment or care
of persons suffering from physical or mental illness
or disease, care of infants, patients of aged persons
and for penal or custody in which the freedom of the
entry is restricted.

4. Assembly buildings: These shall include any
building or part of a building where group of people
gather for amusement, recreation, social, religious,
periodic, civil, travel and similar purpose e.g.
theaters, museums, skating rings, gymnasiums,
dance halls etc.

5. Business buildings: These shall include any building
or part of a building which is used for transaction of
business, for keeping of accounts and records for
similar purposes e.g. city halls, town halls, court
houses, libraries etc.

6. Mercantile buildings: These shall include any
building or part of a building which is used as
shops, stores, market, for display and sale of
mercantile either wholesale or retail.

7. Industrial buildings: These shall include any building
or part of a building or structure, in which products
of materials of all kinds and properties are
fabricated, assembled or processed e.g. refineries,
gas plants, mils, dairies, industries etc. materials or
products.

8. Storage buildings: These shall include any building
or part of a building primarily for the storage of
sheltering of goods, wares or products like
warehouses, cold storages, transit sheds, garages,
hangers, rain storage plant etc.

9. Hazardous buildings: These shall include any
building or part of a building which is used for the
storage, handling, manufacturing or processing of
highly combustible explosive materials or products.
