CODES AND CONVENTIONS

OF NEWSPAPER ADVERTS
One of the conventions of newspaper adverts is the fact that
the image on the poster has to be either shocking or eye-
catching. This can just be something that is interesting or it
can be something that is controversial and alarming.

This image is very shocking

because there are very serious
connotations because the other
boy is using his hand like a gun to
shoot the other young boy. The
use of lighting makes it a lot more
serious as well because the
darkness is more around the
shooter and the light is nearer to
the boy being pointed at.

This image is very gripping

because we, as the audience,
understand the scale of the great
wall of china and the fact that the
image has been made to look like
the children fill the wall is
powerful and upsetting at the
same time because we can see
that all the posters are different
children and not the same.
Another convention is that the logos of the channels are to the side
or in the corners on the print advertisements. The reason for this is
because it will not take away from the effect of the image and it can
also be used to make the logo more bold and stand out more.

The placement of this logo is

white on the boys purple t-shirt
and so it makes it more prominent
and stand out to the audience,
drawing their eyes to it.

The logo and the background

shape is the same, it is
schematic and can set the
tone of the documentary.
In each of these adverts the slogan is the largest text on the image
in order to draw in the attention of the audience and it is something
that is usually short and gripping. A good example of this is shown
below where the young boys are pretending with guns and the
slogan is Disarming Britain. It is very obviously linked to the image
and this is another one of the codes of Newspaper advertisements.

Also underneath the slogan is usually the title of the programme and
the scheduling but these are in a smaller size but the same font to
keep continuity and make it look uniform.
Another thing that is
conventional the fact that all
the text is on the left of the
image because generally we
read from left to right and we
start to look from the left of this
image and we will see the text
and therefore we are drawn
straight to it.
