SELF CONSOLIDATING

CONCRETE
Introduction
SELF-CONSOLIDATING CONCRETE
concrete that is able to flow under its own weight and
completely fill the formwork
while maintaining homogeneity
consolidate without the need for vibrating compaction
Introduction
Quiet casting
Environmental loadings from noise are reduced.
Eliminates the issue of blood circulatory problems
caused by the vibration of concrete.
SCC affords the designer greater flexibility in designing
complex shapes.
Problems with Conventional
Concrete
1. Requiring days and additional cost in the project to
compact and vibrate concrete
2. Health issue concerning blood circulation
3. Challenging or difficult to compact for structures like:
> Underwater concreting
> Cast in situ pile foundation
> Columns with congested reinforcement
ASTM C143
The Slump Flow of SCC ranges from 18 to 32 inches
depending on the requirements for the project.
Requirement for
self compacting
1.
concrete
Filling ability
2. Passing ability
3. Segregation resistance
FILLING ABILITY

Slump Test. T50 cm slump test, V funnel test

ASTM C1611 - Standard Test Method for Slump Flow of
Self-Consolidating Concrete

A "slump" is the diameter of the upper face of a concrete mix

that has been laid out by a steel cone.
PASSING ABILITY
J-ring test, U-box, L-box
ASTM C1621
The test method is for a sample of fresh concrete to be placed
into the commonly used slump cone, either in the normal
upright or inverted position located centrally within the J-ring.
The concrete is placed in a single lift without any tamping or
vibration as for the slump flow test.

SEGREGATION RESISTANCE
Settlement column test, Sieve stability test, Penetration
test
ASTMC1712 - Standard Test Method for Rapid
Assessment of Static Segregation Resistance of Self-
Consolidating Concrete Using Penetration Test.
Self-consolidating concrete (SCC) must have the ability to flow
under its own weight, to pass between reinforcing bars or other
obstacles without segregation, and not segregate during or
after casting.

SCC STRUCTURES
Two anchorage of Akashi-Kaikyo (straits) Bridge, Japan
- 290,000 cubic meter of SCC
Burj Khalifa Dubai, UAE

The SCC was used throughout the structure,

and pumped 166 stories from the bottom.
The slump flow was 24 to 28 in.

- 198 ft (60 m) in length, 60 ft (18 m) in width
and 10 ft (3 m) in depth, and required
approximately 5,000 yd3 (3,800 m3 ) of concrete.
