DEFINITION
To combine two sentences by using conjuction based on their
meaning in the sentences/ subordinated clause as the adverb
Anadverbial clauseis adependentclausethat functions as
anadverb; that is, the entire clause modifies a verb, an adjective, or
another adverb. As with all clauses, it contains
asubjectandpredicate, although the subject as well as the
(predicate) verb may sometimes be omitted and implied (see below).
An adverbial clause is commonly, but not always, fronted by
asubordinate conjunctionsometimes called a trigger word.

CLAUSES
1. Adverb clause of Time
Conj : after, when, as, by the the time, till, as long as, before, while, since,
the last time.
Eg:
Shut the door before you go out.
while he was walking home, he saw an accident

2. Adverb clause of place


Conj :where, anywhere, nowhere, whenever
Eg:
I accompany you whenever you go
Where there is a will, there is a way

3. Adverb clause of concession


Conj: althought, eventhough, even if, despite, though, whereas, in spite of,
as the time.
Eg:
Although he is late, he didnt say sorry
She is very friendly, even if she is a rich student

Conj: as, as if, how, like, as though.
Eg:
He did as I told him
She acts as if she were an artist

5. Adverb clause of purpose or result


Conj : so, so that, in order to, so as to,that, in order that, in case.
Eg:
they worked hard in order to be succesful
I will go now lest I be late

6. Adverb clause of cause or effect


Conj: because, cause, as mean as long as now that as, since, in as much as.
Eg:
It was so cold yesterday that I didnt want to swim
Due to the cold weather, we stayed at home.

Conj: if, even if, unless, in even that, if only, suppose, in case, on
condition that.
Eg:
If I see him, I will invite him to the helloween party tomorrow night
I shall not come to the party unless you come

Eg:

9. adverb clause of purpose


conj:in order to, so that, in order that

FUNCTIONS OF ADVERBS

Since adverb clauses function as adverbs, lets look at the


functions of adverbs:

Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs.


They tell why, when, where, how, how much, and how often an action
occurs.
They can begin a sentence that is a question, and give more
information.
Here are some examples according to what the adverb is modifying:
Verbs: We eat pizza weekly. She watched the wild animal carefully.
Adjectives: That is a very nice person. The dog is extremely
hyperactive.
Adverbs: She sings quite beautifully. My dog is almost always starving.
