By (200-06) the head count poverty in
Pakistan, though decreasing from 34% to 22.3%, is lagging behind the target of 13%. The situation has really worsened in the past 4 years is the proportion of population below minimum level of dietary energy consumption which stood at 58% in 2010/11, owing to two digit inflation over the last 4 years which has significantly decreased the purchasing power of the poor. The completion rate seems to have
declined rapidly in recent years implying that more than a quarter of the students enrolled in primary schools do not complete their education. Pakistans literacy rate, though having improved marginally over the years remains considerably short of the MDG target of 88% by 2015 at 58%, and closer inspection reveals large gender and rural/urban disparities. MD Goal No. 3
In the MDG area of promoting gender
equality and empowering women, Pakistan has achieved one of the highest ratios of women parliamentarians in the South Asia Region. The proportion of women in the national parliament stands at 22.2%. MD Goal No. 4
Pakistan has also achieved its target for
the proportion of children under five who suffered from diarrhea in the last month and received ORT Pakistan stands among the worst performers in child and infant mortality. The number of deaths of children under 1 year of age per 1000 live births is 69 against the target of 40.
