Geography
It is slightly smaller than Pennsylvania
South Korea is mountainous in the east
On the mainland and offshore are islands.
The capital and largest city in South Korea is Seoul.
Is mostly surrounded by water and consists of 2,413 km
of coastline along three seas.
Most famous mountain is the Seoraksan Mountain, the
largest river is the Hangang River.
Description of Country:
The Republic of Korea, also known as South
Korea, is located at the far eastern edge of
Asia.
Official language is Korean, but many other
languages such as English, Japanese, Chinese
are taught widely in schools.
National symbols; National flag Taegeukgi, and the
national flower, Mugunghwa.
South Korean History
Koreas early history was dominated by Imperial Japan
and China.
South Korea came into being after World War 2, as a
result of a 1945 agreement reached by the Allies at a
Potsdam Conference.
This Agreement created the 38th parallel, the boundary
between the northern zone of Korea and the southern
zone
In 1950, the Korean War began, it ended in an armistice
(the war didnt end, they just agreed not to fight, for now)
In 1953, South Korea was a part of the Vietnam war
In 2013, South Korea chose its first female president,
Park Geun-Hye

South Korea since the mid-90s

Korean culture is very patriarchal (sons are preferred
over daughters)

Respect is key and is enforced from a young age
Bowing and different ways of speaking to older people
Oldest son takes care of parents during their old age
Children dont leave home until they get married (late
20s)

Recently, corporal punishment has been outlawed
University is the ultimate goal (life or death)
Public schools are like olympic training grounds. If a
student is gifted at a sport or athletics, they are personally
trained
College entrance exams are extremely competitive
Religion
Constitutional guarantee of freedom of religion
Varies from shamanism, Confucianism, and Buddhism to Christianity, Islam,
and other religions
Numerous Koreans perform Confucian-style ceremonies to commemorate
their ancestors on death dates and special holidays at home and/or grave
sites
Folk beliefs about the afterlife are somewhat influenced by Buddhism but
are characterized by diversity

All fast food is delivered straight to your home. You can put your
dirty dishes outside the door, and the delivery guy will come pick
them up later.
