Dr Sanjeev Reddy k.Hudgikar
Principal, Lingaraj Appa Engineering College,
BIDAR.
Objective of the
proposed work
To investigate and optimize the drilling characteristics
like cutting speed, feed, point angle using TAGUCHI
technique in the drilling process on aluminium alloy
blocks by determine the most significant control
factors affecting the drilling responses such as hole
diameter, surface roughness and thrust force.
METHODOLOGY
Understanding the existing methods and
works for optimizing the drilling process as a
part of literature review.
Selecting the Al alloy for carrying-out the
drilling process.
Experiments will be carried out as per the
Taguchi experimental design and an
orthogonal array will be used to study the
influence of various combinations of process
parameters on hole quality.
METHODOLOGY .
Drilling process will be done by using HSS and
carbide twist drills under dry and wet cutting
conditions.
Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and genetic algorithm
tests will be conducted to determine the
significance of each process parameter on drilling.
Measuring the critical parameters to optimize the
drilling process.
Optimizing the parameters like cutting speed, feed,
point angle using TAGUCHI technique.
Documenting the results and approach.
LITERATURE SURVEY
1. Adem iek et al. (2013), the effects of cryogenic treatment and
drilling parameters on surface and hole quality were investigated in
the drilling of AISI 304 stainless steel under dry drilling conditions.
2. Vinod Kumar Vankanti, Venkateswarlu Ganta (2014) optimized the
process parameters namely, cutting speed, feed, point angle and
chisel edge width in drilling of glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP)
composites.
3. Mustafa Kurt et al. (1987) employed orthogonal arrays of Taguchi,
signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio, ANOVA and regression analysis to find the
optimal levels and to analyze the effect of the drilling parameters on
surface roughness and hole diameter accuracy values.
4. M.Asad et al. (1990) carried out series of tests on dry cutting on an
aluminium alloy (A2024-T351) to study geometrical analysis of the
chip by using high speed camera and high frequency sampling
measurement of the cutting force signal are realized.
5. V.N. Gaitonde et al. (2000) studied the methodology of
Taguchi in optimization for multi-objective drilling problem to
minimize burr size, in order to determine optimal values of
cutting speed, feed, point angle and lip clearance angle for
selected drill diameter values to minimize burr height and
burr thickness during drilling of AISI 316L stainless steel work
piece.
6. J.P. Davin and Pedro Reis (2002) studied the delamination
drilling carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) using design
experiment, based on a combination of Taguchis techniques
and on the analysis of variance (ANOVA) approach
7. Mustafa Kurt (2009) applied Taguchi methods in the
optimization of cutting parameters for improving surface
finish and hole diameter accuracy in dry drilling processes of
Al 2024 at dry conditions.
Expected Out Comes
The proposed research work can determine the
influence of temperature, thrust force, Helix
angle, number of flutes, and surface roughness
on hole quality.
By comparing the experimental results the best
parameters will be determined by using the
ANOVA and Genetic Algorithm.
The work may be useful in selecting optimum
values of various process parameters that
would not only minimize the thrust force and
torque but also reduce the delimitation and
improve the quality of the drilled hole.
