story

Kasra The son of an Arabic sheik, Allah knows why, studies in the
Czech Republic.

A month later he writes to his parents:

It's beautiful here, the people are very nice and I very much like it here,
however on and off I'm ashamed when I come to school with my golden
Mercedes seeing one of my professors getting out of the tramway.

Couple of days later he receives a check for 1$ Million and a short reply
from the parents:

Don't make us lose our face, buy yourself a tramway as well.

What is culture
www.changingminds.org

My definition: A reflection of the dominant (shared)

needs of a group (but there are more, see Ch1)
On each level we should find expressions of these
needs
Needs originate from:

Hofstedes (Dutch professor) approach:
the culture onion
Core:values, in other words, how people believe things ought to be,
what they hold dear to them. This level is invisible and is manifested
through the three other layers:

- rituals : such as festivals, ways of paying respect, hanging out trends

- icons : persons admired by the society as a whole
- symbols : words, artefacts, pictures that
carry a special meaning

Watch out: this onion differs from the onion according
to Schein (see Chapter 1 in the book)
