Drilling
It is a common hole
making process using a
twist drill.
Very frequently, drilling is
preliminary operation to
boring, reaming or grinding
where final finishing and
sizing take place.
Unlike shaping and
turning, this process
involves two principal
cutting edges.
Nomenclature of Twist Drill
The twist drill is a complex tool that usually has two
cutting edges designed to produce identical chips.
There are four major actions taking place during
drilling operation.
1. A small hole is pierced by the rotating web.
2. Chips are formed by rotating cutting edges (lip).
3. Chips are conveyed out of the hole by a screw
conveyer in the form of helical flutes provided in the
drill.
4. The drill is guided in the hole already produced by
the margins.

Cutting forces in drilling
Calculation is based on the middle point of each
cutting edge.
The effect of all cutting forces acting on the drill can
be represented by a resisting torque M and a thrust
force F.
Action at the chisel edge is one of pushing into the
material like a wedge.
