GIANTS MOCK
DRAFT 2017
ROBERTO MARTINEZ
ROUND 1
THE 23rd PICK
Deshaun Watson, QB Clemson
Why? Giants need to look for a future QB. Eli Manning only has a few years
left. Not only that what if a serious injury happens to Eli WHOS THE
BACKUP? Geno Smtih? Yeah thats not going to work!!
STRENGTHS: The first thing that stands out about Watson is his remarkable
athleticism. He is a fluid athlete with the vision, elusiveness and speed to make even
well-coached defenses look silly. WEAKNESSES: Watson is shorter than ideal and
possesses a relatively slim frame with limited room for additional muscle mass.
COMPARES TO: Tyrod Taylor, Buffalo Bills: Watson is taller and slimmer than Taylor
but offers similar dual-threat abilities, as well as a history of proving doubters wrong.
--Rob Rang, 1/3/2017
ROUND 2
THE 55th PICK
Dalvin Tomlinson, DT Alabama
Why? After losing Hankins to the Colts they could use a DT. Tomlinson would be the
run stopping beast next to Snacks.
STRENGTHS: Large-framed athlete who carries his weight well. Nimble lower body
to sidestep and quickly redirect through congestion. Upper body power and long arms
to stack the point of attack, eating double-teams. Hips and feet stay in sync.
Technically-sound hands to snatch-and-stash
WEAKNESSES: Limited pass rush traits. Doesn?t have the initial quickness to split
gaps, relying more on timing than burst. Stands up at times and gets caught in hand
fights, not going anywhere. Occasionally reverts to brute force over mechanics when
countering.
COMPARES TO: Dan Williams
--Dane Brugler (2/7/17)
ROUND 3
THE 87th PICK
Antonio Garcia, OT Troy
Why? Garcia is a very solid player coming out of Troy. He needs to add weight but he could fix the
Giants OT problem.
STRENGTHS: Sports a prototypical tackle build with a tapered, high-cut frame, long arms and plenty
of room for additional muscle mass without sacrificing his quickness. Poised in pass protection, easing
out of his stance with an efficient kickslide and patiently waiting for the defender to come to him.
Shows good quickness and balance to force defenders to run the arc around him.
WEAKNESSES: Protected by an offense that routinely gets the ball out of the quarterback's hands
quickly and rarely asks its linemen to block out of the three-point stance. Highly inconsistent hand
placement, shooting them too low and leaving himself vulnerable to swim moves and too often
reaching outside of the numbers and grabbing the side panels of the jersey. Can get lazy with his
footwork, lunging rather than mirroring opponents and occasionally leaving easy lanes in the B gap
(between the left guard) that NFL rushers will have no problems exploiting.
COMPARES TO: David Bakhtiari, Green Bay Packers: The blindside protector for former NFL MVP
Aaron Rodgers, Bakhtiari has gone from a fourth round pick (No. 109 overall in 2013) to a legitimate
Pro Bowl candidate. Just like Garcia at Troy, Bakhtiari's quick feet, length and tenacity stood out at
Colorado but scouts questioned how well he'd acclimate to the greater size and strength of the NFL.
--Rob Rang (1/16/17)
ROUND 4
THE 143th PICK
Jonnu Smith, TE Florida International
Why? Giants need a TE and he fits the bill
Strengths: Plays with urgency and looks to squeeze the most out of each
play. Flashes an electric burst up the field and into his routes. Seam buster
with ability to race over top of the linebacker and into a throwing window
quickly.
Weaknesses: Body catcher who doesn't trust his own hands. Has dropped
10 passes over the last two seasons with too many double catches. Needs
to do a better job of helping his QB by working to the ball and shielding.
COMPARES TO: Delanie Walker

ROUND 5
THE 167th PICK
Marquel Lee, LB Wake Forest
Strengths: Good build with long arms. Shows some instincts in run
game and reacts quickly to flow of the play. Races ahead of running
back when he has play-side contain and spills it back inside. Team
leader. Disciplined approach when plays flow to outside.
Weaknesses Has a tendency to run himself into traffic. Bites on
misdirection and inside zone plays. Drifts too close to line of
scrimmage and becomes easy pickings for climbing linemen sealing
off a cutback lane. Lacks athletic ability to spin out of trouble or
climb over top of blocks. Lateral scrapes lose ground due to lack of
quickness.
ROUND 6
THE 207th PICK
Elijah McGuire, RB UL Lafayette
STRENGTHS: McGuire is a square runner with low pad level, using
forward lean and run toughness to be productive between the tackles. He
uses a good mix of balance and power to do his damage inside, but the
athleticism and speed are also present to bounce runs outside, including
secondary quickness once he clears the initial level of the defense.
WEAKNESSES: McGuire has shown the ability to break a long run and
be a home run threat, but he has room to improve his run tempo and
decisiveness to better string together runs. He can be too patient at
times, allowing the defense to swallow him up while he is waiting for a
hole to open. He isn't immune to the occasional drop.
COMPARES TO: Kenneth Dixon
ROUND 7
THE 241th PICK
Amba Etta-Tawo, WR Syracuse
STRENGTHS: Etta-Tawo does an excellent job making himself
available in his route with strong finishing skills at the catch point,
finding the ball well in flight and showing natural ball skills on 50-50
passes. When matched up one-on-one downfield, Syracuse force
feedd him the ball and scouts are taking notice.
Weaknesses Only one year of college production. Tagged with nine
drops to his 30 catches in his second and third seasons. Will
telegraph his comeback routes a little. Still very raw with his route
running and wasn't asked to run much of the tree.
NFL Comparison Chris Conley
