simultaneously challenging notions made toward women by the country
discourse community in general, Miranda Lambert is an authentic lyricist if
there ever was one. Miranda is able to conjure song lyrics from within the
country discourse community that translate what she feels and believes on
the inside to a language of performance that can persuade and be
understood by her audience. As humans, Miranda and much of her audience
should truly know how being ostracized by others for not reacting to a
situation in the way those outsiders see as appropriate feels. Miranda
represents a population that, though they identify with Southern or Mid-
Western culture, feel silenced by circumstances such as genuine heartbreak.
In the song Mamas Broken Heart, Miranda expresses her mothers desire to
maintain an image in society that Miranda is falling short of because of her
ill reaction to a broken heart. However, Miranda feels that a little crazy in
coping serves her well and decides to share in a song her refusal to
subscribe to the clich reactions of a well put together lady, and through
her honesty and authenticity encourages her audience to do the same.
