Visual pleasure and

the narrative gaze

By Tom Baldwin
The idea behind the theory by Laura
Mulvey
The idea behind the theory is the objectification of women meaning, women
being seen as objects. This theory suggests that women are meant to be looked
at and can often be important to the storyline.

Women can often be presented as sexual objects. Men being the dominate group
who go to watch a movie tend to usually be the looker.

The idea of the shift to objectification in women is seen as a source of pleasure

for men and can link to voyeurism.

Voyeurism means - A person who derives sexual gratification from covert

observation of an unsuspecting person who is naked, undressing, or engaging in
sexual activity.
Examples of voyeurism and the
theory in thriller films
Trumann show His entire life is watched and documented on a TV show without the main
character knowing therefore invading his privacy.

In Alfred Hitchcock's, Rear Window a thriller mystery film, the main character is seen to be a
peeping Tom as he is constantly look out of his window after breaking his leg. The male
gaze is used as he looks at women through his binoculars presenting the women as objects
for the male to look at.

Peeping Tom The old British film shows the idea of being a peeping Tom to be a dark and
wrong. The murderer kills his victims while filming them. This means he can use the footage
as a male gaze as he watches the women he kills, representing them as objects.
