Definition of Smart City :
Smart cities use information and communication technologies (ICT) to be more
intelligent and efficient in the use of resources, resulting in cost andenergy
savings, improved service delivery and quality of life, and reduced environmental
footprint--all supporting innovation and the low-carbon economy.
Origin of Smart city
The concept of smart cities originated at the time when the entire world was
facing one of the worst economic crises. In 2008, IBM (International Bussines
Machines) began work on a 'smarter cities' concept as part of its Smarter Planet
initiative. By the beginning of 2009, the concept had captivated the imagination of
various nations across the globe.
Initiative of European cities for being Smart
European cities tend to be denser and have better public transit.
Larger commitment to cycling and walking.
A stronger focus on sustainability andlow-carbon solutions.

Menurut The IESE Business School, menilainya melalui index yang disebut Cities in Motion
Index (CIMI), dengan cara mengutus peneliti ke 135 kota di 55 negara di seluruh dunia
dan mengukurnya dengan 50 indicator dan 20 kota pintar terbaik di dunia menurut Cities
in Motion Index (CIMI) yaitu antara lain :

agaimana Perkembangan Smart City di Indonesia?
Dibandingkan 20 negara tsb, kota-kota di Indonesia memang
terlampau muda dan dapat dibilang terlambat dalam menerapkan
smart city, sehingga masih jauh dari kata prestasi, apalagi dampak
besar secara langsung yang bisa dirasakan oleh masyarakat.

Pemerintah Provinsi Jakarta berupaya menerapkan pelayanan


pemerintahannya, khususnya berupaya menerapkan program Smart City
melalui ruang Jakarta Smart City Lounge, dimana ruang tersebut merupakan
command center yang mengoperasikan segala komponen TIK Smart City.
Melalui ruang tsb operator bisa menerima pengaduan warga terkait
permasalahan sosial, mulai dari banjir, kemacetan, sampah dan sebagainya.

Surabaya sudah sejak lama menerapkan konsep konsep kota cerdas, konsep e-
government dan e-procurement sudah diterapkan di Kota Surabaya sejak tahun
2002. Konsep lainnya seperti e-budgeting, e-delivery, e-controlling, dan e-monitoring
diterapkan kemudian. Dalam konsep e-monitoring, pemerintah kota Surabaya
misalnya bisa memantau situasi seluruh kota, mulai dari lalu lintas jalan raya hingga
kondisi tempat pembuangan sampah.
