Religions within the Salt Lake Community

6.2
Religions in the United States of America
-Compared to America, Salt Lake City has
almost an equal amount of diversity as
there is in America with the different
churches and religions instead of having
a more common religion that many
people are apart of.
-In this part of Salt Lake City, comparing
it to some other states in the nation, some
states there are more Christian churches
than others, like the South or East side of
America, where the bible is well-known.
Salt Lake Buddhist Temple
History of place: In 1912, a minister Koya Who worships there now? There are Asian
Uchida was sent down to Ogden, Utah to hold a americans (likely the japanese) that follow
memorial for first generation Japanese that had Jodo shinshu, although anyone can worship this
died, this date marked a movement on religion, there are a few caucasians that follow
establishing an organized buddhist temple. the religions.
Continuing on Salt Lake Buddhist Temple

What happens there daily? In the temple there are services held every morning with Hirano Sensei,
it usually starts at 10:00 am. On sunday at ten oclock in the morning, Dharma Schools Services is
offered and every month there is a Shotsuki Hoyo service, a memorial to honor members who have
died during that month.
Their relationship with the wider community? The community accept the temple and since anyone
is welcome to join the services, the buddhist community is growing, that it is expanding. In fact they
have another location in Ogden, and a new temple is being built lol
Challenges they may face? A challenge the temple face, is keeping the continuation of Jodo Shinshu
in the community and trying to preserve how the founders created it in a new environment and
generation. Requirement to change needs a new methodology with sacrifices and determination.
Japanese Church of Christ

History of the place: In 1924, the church was erected at its

current location at 268 W 100 S. Earlier between 1918
and 1924, the Pastor traveled around Utah, from mines
to railroad camps and recruited many Japanese-
speaking people. The church continues to grow and is
still going strong in its current location.

Who worships there now: People that worship there are

all Japanese-speaking, hence the name Japanese Church
of Christ. The Church has many programs for all ages
from infant to youth to adults.
Japanese Church of Christ

What happens there daily: The Nichigo, a Japanese Ministry,

holds a bible study every Sunday at 9:00 a.m. Normal worship
services are held Sunday at 10 am. So just after the Bible study.
They have a program that involves the youth that is informal. They
call it Urban Grace, and in Urban Grace they do many activities
that are Christ-centered.

Relationship with Community: The Japanese Church of Christ is

involved with other churches and the community in many Service
Projects. Such as soup kitchens, where they can serve free food
and meet new people. Other types of service they do is serving in
the Nikkei Senior Center which they have been doing for over 65
years.
First Presbatyrian Church of Salt Lake City
In the year 1869 the first transcontinental railroad was built and the mormons
werent isolated from the world anymore it brought it more religious diversity.
First Presbyterian Church of Salt Lake City
In 1871 the first presbyterian congregation was created and grew rapidly. In 1905
the building was built by Walter E. Ware. He got his invision from the cathedral
church of Carlyle, England and was designed with a Gothic Revival structure,
with its low square tower and. The exterior was built of locally quarried red
butte stone with hard stone trim. It is one of the oldest religious structures in Salt
Lake and was remodeled in 2003.
Conclusion
The most surprising thing about the Utah community is the fact that there are
many other religions around us here. Utah is indeed diverse and has many
diverse beliefs. What wasnt super surprising was the fact that it is very religious
here. Most people we know are either Mormon or are apart of a different church.
We expected to learn more about different cultures and religions other than
common religions practices in the community such as, christianity. The
knowledge we have now of the demographics of the nation is astonishing. Its
actually really exciting to know we have different cultures and what not in the
nation.
