RESPONSE TO THE
CULTURAL ATTITUDE AND
ISSUES ABOUT PRISONS
Prison has always given us that frightening feeling whenever we hear it
because of what the culture has shown us. We aim provide a shelter that is decent
and humane. Providing comfort to the users has a major impact in their
rehabilitation process, giving them the facilities and amenities that are necessary.
Here in the Philippines, prisons do not have enough space to shelter the number
of inmates that are being put into prisons. Lastly, the design should not scare the
prisoners nor the visitors. Providing them the typical Philippine-look- prison design
will not help in the rehabilitation process. Providing a soft yet high security design
should be on the list, this has an effect in the psychological, emotional and
physical healing process of the detainees.
CONTEMPORARY ISSUES
The plan should distribute the function to avoid traffic within the facility. Also,
the goal is to break the typical rigid look of a prison, developing the spatial and
perceptual diversity of every detainee to make it more stress-free whenever
someone is entering it. This idea can also help in the healing or rehabilitation
process of the inmates. Providing a world-class / effective design which represents
aesthetics and function will break that typical thinking of what a prison looks like
and what a prison should be.

Women in prison have experienced victimization, unstable family life, school

and work failure, and substance abuse and mental health problems. Social factors
that marginalize their participation in mainstream society and contribute to the
rising number of women in prison include poverty, minority group member, single
motherhood, and homelessness.
