The Road of Getting Help

By Kaitlyn Stevens
Mental illness affect a large
proportion of society, only 17%
of the adult population is said
to be in prime mental health
(Mental Health Basics para
2).
However, the problem is that
not as many people get the
help that they need.

There are so many people out

there suffering in silence from
something that plagues their
mind internally and they feel
there is no help or escape.

But keeping this pent up inside

just hurts people more than it
helps them.
Why are so many people
afraid of getting the help they
need?

The quality of mental health

care has gotten better in recent
years. There are programs put
in place to help people and
not just institutionalize people
in creepy buildings.

In 2015, there was a $483

million dollar budget for
researching cures for mental
illnesses and help those with a
mental illness in need
(Federal Budget.. para. 3).
The National Mental
Health Act (NMHA)
was created in 1946 to
help returned veterans
from World War I with
their mental problems.

It changed some
funding from state
governments towards a
national level and put it
into the research of
mental illnesses.

here have been many

medical breakthroughs
in the field of mental
illnesses and lives have
generally gotten better
for the mentally ill.
Some people fear being
judged or looked at
differently when they
get help for a mental
illness, although its
probably not true.

There are such a small

amount of people with
prime mental health,
Its not that uncommon
to have a mental illness.

If other people were to

find out they would
probably just shrug it
off as normal because
of how common mental
illnesses are.
There are many
different ways a
person with a mental
illness can be helped.

The first one is the

most stereotypical:
going to see a
therapist.

While it may vary by

person and mental
illness, it can help and
its a good option to
consider.

Therapy can help are:

depression, social
anxiety, and even
ADHD (Treatment
para. 1).
Another controversial
option for treatment is
medication.

There are some

antidepressant
medications that can
help people with
Depression and many
other mental illnesses
such as different
anxieties.

Paxil and Zoloft,

which are two
medications used for
anxiety, are the 7th
and 8th most
prescribed
medications in the
United States (Folk
para. 4).
There are some
ways that people
can get more
support without
having to go to a
doctor.

There are groups

and chats both in
the community
and online for
people with
related illnesses to
each other and
have more
support.

This is a simple
way to get help
but can be very
beneficial to some
people.
A person with a
mental illness has
more support than
just people with the
same illness.

Friends are another

option to help. They
may not have any
professional
training, but they
can be there for
support.

A person with a
mental illness can
feel so alone, yet,
theyre surrounded
by people who have
no idea-unless
theyre told.
Despite these
options, many still
remain silent.

For anorexia alone,

60% of people that
have anorexia dont
get the help they
need and 6% of
those individuals
die each
year(Statistics on
Eating.. para. 5).

And this is only

ONE of the many
illnesses out there.

There is so much
more support out
there for people
than they realize.
There is so much more
support out there for
people than they realize.

The world may look

dark for a person with a
mental illness, but they
can find the light again.

A persons quality of life

can get so much better
just by getting the help
they need.

Just know, if you or

someone you know has
a mental illness, there
are options and no one
is alone in the fight.

Life gets better after

receiving help.
