Our Proposal
Our goal is to turn Varsity sports, for only junior
and senior players, into a P.E credit. Each sport
season would count as one third of a credit.
You would have to play the full season.
( No joining half way through, no quitting). As
with any policy there will be rules.
Our Survey
In order to get a better idea of how many
students were actually struggling with getting a
P.E credit we surveyed 53 students. The results
were 44 students said they supported this. 9
students said they did not support it, and out of
the 44 students, 31 said it would directly benefit
them.

" One and one-half physical education credits are required
for graduation. All students are required to take Introduction

may satisfy the P.E. requirement by taking a semester of
dance at St. Johnsbury Academy. Alternatively, students
may receive one P.E. credit by:
Playing two different Junior Varsity or Varsity sports.
Playing the same sport for two years at the Junior Varsity
or Varsity level."

All of our extracurricular athletics also meet during P.E. time. If a student is involved
in an adult-supervised sports team within his or her community, he or she may be
eligible for a P.E. waiver.
Extracurricular Sports Program
The primary goal of the athletic program is to foster sportsmanship, leadership, and
personal growth. Student-athletes learn to balance academic eligibility with
responsibilities to their teammates. The team experience is open to any academically
eligible VCS student. While the objective of any competition is to win, this is
secondary to the primary goal of the VCS athletic program.
Vermont Commons School currently fields interscholastic teams in the following
sports: Volleyball (boys, girls, and co-ed) Cross Country (co-ed) Soccer (co-ed);
Basketball (boys and girls); and Ultimate Frisbee (co-ed)
Missisquoi Valley Union High School-
Students who participate in interscholastic athletics at Missisquoi Valley UHS or another VPA member
school may apply for credit towards graduation requirements in physical education.
1. A student must participate in two (2) sports seasons to become eligible for this credit
opportunity, and may earn no more than credit for successful completion of these
seasons.
2. A student must participate in the sports season for its entirety in order to receive credit. Receipt of a certificate from
the Athletic Department will constitute successful
completion of the sports season. Students who do not complete a season (leave or are
suspended from the team, cut from the team, or become academically ineligible) may not
use that sports season for credit. This will be documented by the Director of Athletics.
3. The use of this credit option must be completed before starting a students senior year of
school.
4. The interscholastic athletics credit option for physical education will appear as a P on
the students transcript, and will not be counted as part of a students grade point average
(GPA).
5. This credit option in physical education must be approved by both the Guidance
Department and the Administration.

Outside Physical Education Points: After 1.0 credit completion,
students may collect up to one semester of outside PE credit through
interscholastic sports and community physical education activities.
Outside PE points can be earned through team and/or individual
interscholastic J.V. and Varsity sports, or community programs that
relate to physical education and are instructor led. To ensure quality
physical education, only .25 to 0.5 outside PE credits can be claimed
towards a specific interscholastic or community physical education
activity. Students interested in outside credit need to apply through any
of the high school physical education teachers. The process includes
setting goals, coach/instructor observation, and evidence of time put in,
and a written evaluation by coach/instructor and student.
