In this chapter, you will learn to:
Understand and use the concept of tangents
to a circle.

Understand and use the properties of angle

between tangents chord to solve problems.

Understand and use the properties of

common tangents to solve problem.
8.1 Tangents to a Circle
8.1.1 Identifying tangents to a circle

8.1.2 Properties of the tangent to a circle

8.1.3 Constructing tangents to a circle

8.1.4 Properties related to two tangents from

a given point outside the circle.
Learning Outcomes:
Identifying tangents to a circle

Make inference that the tangents to a circle is

a straight line perpendicular to the radius that
passes through the contact point.
Circle

A circle is the set of points in a plane that are equidistant

from a given point O . The distance r from the center is
called the radius, and the point O is called the center.
Twice the radius is known as the diameter d= 2r . The
angle a circle subtends from its center is a full angle,
equal to 360 0 or 2 radians.

Identifying the tangents to a circle
A tangents is a straight line which touches a
circle at only one point.
The point is called contact point.

Identifying the tangents to a circle
If a line cuts a circle at two
distinct point, it called secant.

Chord

Not a tangents
but a secant.

lines is a tangent to the circle.
a) PQ T U

Properties of the tangent to a circle
A tangent to a circle is a straight line which is
perpendicular to the radius that passes
through the contact point.

If ABC is the tangent to the circle at B, then

angle ABO = angle CBO = 90o
Properties of the tangent to a circle
Example 2:
The diagram on the right shows a circle with
centre O. ABC is a tangent to the circle. State
whether each of the following angle is a right
angle.
a) Angle ABD
b) Angle OBC
Evaluation

Identify all the tangents to the circle shown in

the diagram and state the point of contact for
each of the tangents.
Conclusion
A tangents is a straight line
which touches a circle at only Tan
one point.
