Special education? Are you sure?

Just because you received a Title 1 letter does not mean your child needs special
education. However it is important to understand what special education is and
know that
Special education means specially designed instruction that meets the unusual
needs of an exceptional student and that might require special materials, teaching
techniques, or equipment and/or facilities. (Daniel P. Hallahan, 2015, p. 8)
Special education these days is a term used that covers anywhere from
something like a learning disability (dyslexia) to a disorder that is emotional or
behavioral (OCD, ADHD, PTSD, or simple social skills) to a physical handicap
(muscular dystrophy). There are tons of categories under the umbrella of special
education!
Here are just a few you might recognize!

The number of children and youth ages 321 receiving special education services was 6.4 million,
or about 13 percent of all public school students, in 201213. Some 35 percent of students
receiving special education services had specific learning disabilities. (National Center for
Education Statistics, 2015)

Remember
Just because your child has the opportunity to receive Title 1 services, doesnt mean that they have a
disability. It only means that right now they need just a little bit more help in a subject! If they end up needing
more it would be best to find that out sooner than later. Early detection is key to their success as a student!
Just remember, its not your fault! Special education means so many things these days. Dont let that phrase

we are here for you as educators to help give your child the education especially designed for their needs.

succeed in their education!
WhyIchoosethesetopics

I choose these topics because if parents do not understanding the beginning of the RTI and
Special Education process, I think it can start to scare parents. I see it all the time. Parents
dont want a label on their kids when they need a bit of help in reading or math. Maybe
they have a mild learning disability and just need to be reassured that they arent alone and
that its ok to have them receive help. I encounter this all the time and I wish parents knew
how much their child is struggling and we have the tools to help them. Its like if their kid
cant breath and I have the cure, but they dont want him to be the kid that uses an inhaler.
It makes me sad and I hate to see it. I had a bunch more to add and I might at some point
so that maybe it can be shared with parents. I used my schools data because I think its
important to show that we are data driven and not signaling out on their child.
