Performance of Using Waste Glass Powder in

Concrete As Replacement Of Cement

ANANTH KRISHNA K P
INTRODUCTION

As we know now a days ,most of developing country facing

shortage of post consumers disposal waste site and it has

become very serious problem. For this reason, regenerating

and using waste product as resources prevents

environmental pollutions.
In this research post consumer waste glass is considered. Instead

of Waste glass ending up as landfill it is been used as replacement

for cement. As it cant be dissolved by natural or normal

recycling ways.

Most of the recovered waste glass is used by glass manufacturing

company in production of new glasses such as bottles etc..

Only certain category of glasses can be recycled due to high cost

of manufacturing. Manufacturers can only use waste glass that

has been pre-sorted by colour and type .

They are brown glass & clear glass , green glass cant be used for

recycling.
CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF VARIOUS
COLOURED GLASS
SIGNIFICANCE

It replaces upto 30% of cement in concrete mix.

It may give less cost of using this kind of admixture rather than
buying expensive admixtures .

Reduces landfill.

Reduces overall porosity & increases strength.

It can suppress alkali reactivity.

Shows better thermal insulation.

OBJECTIVES

Increases the workability of concrete mix.

Increases the compressive strength.

Lighten concrete.

Reduce landfill deposit.

MATERIALS

Cement:

Ordinary Portland cement of 33 grade conforming to

IS 8112 .

Fine aggregate:

Clean river sand whose max size is 4.75mm

conforming to grading zone II.
Coarse aggregate:

Machine crushed blue granite stone angular in shape.

Glass powder:

Glass powder ground in ball/ pulveriser for a period of

30 to 60 min resulting in particle size less than 150 m &
sieved in 75 m .

Analysis and discussion of workability
CONCLUSION
As a conclusion, all the objectives of this study are
achieved Concrete with using waste glass powder has a
very high workability from control sample.

This result achieved from the slump test that use of

waste glass powder were will increase the workability
of concrete.
From this research, using waste glass powder is giving
positive value even though the value compare to
standard mix it just less about 1N/mm.2

Concrete become lighter when mix with waste glass

powder. Therefore, concrete mix that using glass
powder is giving lightweight concrete.
