3.1 General
Single side band transmission with suppressed carrier
and dual frequency conversion.
Amplitude Modulation.
Large No. of LED indications to indicate the working
condition of the terminal are available.
Built-in-meter indicates all D.C. voltages and
send/receive signal conditions.
Signal send is indicated for all the three stages i.e. VF, IF
and HF.
3.2Modules.
3.2.1Power Supply Unit
SV1

Input (-) 48V D.C.

Output is (+) 8V, (+/-)12V, (+/-)38V

D.C.
Green LEDs H1, H2 & H3 indicate

presence of these voltages

3.2.2VF Transmit Module NFS

This is complete VF send portion of PLC Terminal.

Generates pilot signal (2580+/- 30, 3780 +/-30).
Speech (F2); Data (F3, F4) and protection signal (F6) are
processed and adjusted individually in this module.
If transmission of protection signal is not required, the F6 input
can also be used as an input for data channel.
The straps inserted for PLC terminal with protection signal /
without protection signal are different.
All VF signals combine together to enter following IF stage i.e.
ZFS Module.
Measuring test jacks and path break jacks for various V F
signals are provided.
GREEN LED HI indicates transmission of pilot dial frequency.
Therefore, transmission of seizure pulse and dial pulses are seen by
flickering of green LED HI.
By pressing switch P, transmission of pilot signal can be stopped, this
helps to know the genuineness of pilot signal at higher stages.
YELLOW LED H2 indicates transmission of mid pilot frequency tone of
2580 HZ. This happens when switch S3 is pressed or when incoming
pilot signal fails i.e. failure of pilot receive section.
RED LED H3 indicates failure of pilot send frequency.
When push switch K is pressed, compander is bye-passed.
At both ends, position of switch K should be same i.e. either pressed or
released.
If pilot fails (in the pilot transmitter) all VF inputs are switched off.
During tele-protection signal transmission also, all the VF inputs (F2, F3,
F4) are briefly interrupted and F6 is connected with full send power.
3.2.3IF Stage send Module ZFS

Combined VF signal from NFS is

converted to IF stage.
It is designed for twin channel.

Measuring jacks are provided to check

IF stage send path levels.

Pot. R60 is for IF carrier leakage

adjustment.
3.2.4HF Stage Send Module
HFS

IF signal from ZFS is converted to the HF stage.

Preamplification takes place in this module.
Pot. R15 is for adjustment of HF carrier leakage.
Pot. R33 is for HF preamplifier gain.
HF Trans filter can be tuned to all required
frequency bands by varying the circuit combinations
of the capacitors and adjusting the inductance.
3.2.5Carrier Supply Module
TRV

It contains the master oscillator of 7.68 MHz.

Pilot, IF, HF signals are derived from this
fundamental frequency (7.68 MHz).
Switches are provided to get desired frequencies.
LEDs H1,H2, H3 and H4 monitor presence of four
modulation frequencies i.e. IF1, IF2, HFS and HFR
respectively.
Any frequency that is absent; its LED lights up.
3.2.6 20W Amplifier with line
fitter VST 20.

It serves the purpose of Line Amplifier and Line send filter.

RED LED H2 lights up when the send level falls below a set
value or fails.
YELLOW LED H1 lights up when the amplifier is overloaded.
Line Amplifier is not inter changeable due to line filter in it.
Line filter can be retuned to any carrier send frequency.
For tuning the line filter to any carrier frequency detailed
instructions are given in firms literature.
3.2.7HF HYBRID HFG

It is used for isolating the transmitter and the

receiver in contiguous band operation.
Contiguous band working means where send and
receive carrier frequencies differ by 4kHz only (say
340x344).
It is used in place of HF receive line filter LFE.
It has a variable attenuator which can be set in
steps of 3dB between 0 to 33 dB.
3.2.8Receive Line Filter LFE

It is used in PLC Terminals with spaced band working i.e.

when send and receive carrier frequencies differ by more than
8 kHz (say 140x148 kHz, 160x220 kHz etc.
It also contains a HF pre attenuation unit consisting of a fixed
9 dB attenuator and a variable attenuator with 12 stages
between 0 and 33 dB.
It can be tuned to any frequency in the range 35 to 500 kHz.
Coarse tuning (capacitive) is performed by establishing a
predefined combination of capacitance components of the
gang capacitors.
Fine tuning (inductive) in the frequency range defined by
capacitance combination is performed using tunable coils.
3.2.9HF Stage Receive Module
HFE.

It contains HF signal attenuator, prefilter and HF/IF

demodulator.
With the help of soldering straps, this module can
be adapted to any carrier frequency band from 35
to 500 kHz.

R34 is for carrier leakage adjustment.

3.2.10IF Stage Receive Section ZFE

The lower side band is filtered out of the previously

converted (HF/IF) receive signal (in HFE) in the
module.
It receives IF signal from HFE and delivers VF
signal to NFE.
AGC amplifier to deliver constant VF signal is
included in the module.
Pot. R38, for adjustment of IF carrier leakage after
demodulation.
3.2.11Gain Control Module
PRG.
It compensates for level variations in the receive path due to attenuation
changes in transmission link.
It contains VF amplifier, control system for AGC amplifier in ZFE, level
monitor, signal / noise monitor, visual display of control signal margin.
RED LED HI is signal to noise indicator i.e. lights up in presence of
higher noise.
RED LED H2 lights up to indicate failure of receive pilot or its fall below
a set value.
LED chain H3 to H18 indicates the control margin of received pilot signal.
A no control margin is indicated by yellow pair of LEDs H3.
A low control margin is indicated by lower green LEDs H4 or H5.
A high control margin is indicated by upper pair of LEDs
LED H10 indicates mid. AGC level
A maximum control margin is indicated by top yellow pair of LEDs H18.
3.2.12VF Receive Module
NFE.
It is complete VF section in receive leg.
The joint VF signal containing all the VF signals is received in this module
from ZFE.
The different signals such as speech, data and protection signals are
separated from one another amplified and fed via 4 separate outputs to
devices and equipment connected to the PLC-terminal.
The gain of each of the 4 outputs can be adjusted separately.
All 4 VF outputs are disconnected if the receive pilot tone failure is
recognized or if signal to noise ratio falls below a predetermined value.
Green LED H1 indicates receipt of pilot dial frequency from remote
station. Thus receipt of dial seizure pulses is clearly indicated by this LED.
Yellow LED H2 indicates receipts of mid pilot frequency (2580Hz).
RED LED H3 indicates level failure in pilot receive.
Measuring test jacks and breakjacks for various VF signals are provided
and indicated on the module.
3.2.13Test Telephone Module
BSE

It isolates the control signals between the VF stage

and switching equipment, thus protecting the input
and output circuits of the system against over
voltages.
It permits service call to be made from the PLC
terminal via a standard 4 wire telephone handset.
Data signals and protection signals are not routed
through this module.
3.2.14DC Meter Module (DCM).

Monitoring of +/-38V, +/-12V, +8V D.C. supply can

be done.
Pilot /speech signal at VF/IF/HF stage transmitter
and IF receive signal can be done.
Stand by reading of NFS, ZFS and HFS is due to
pilot signal alone. When speech is present these
readings go up. When speech stops, reading
comes down to pilot level indication.
TESTING AND
COMMISSIONING:

For testing purpose, special type of measuring jacks and

special type of measuring cards are used.
These measuring jacks P1, P2, P3 etc. are 3-pin jacks.
Special cords with matching plug at one end and three
banana plugs for use in test meters are supplied with each
terminal.
These three banana plugs are numbered 1 (blue), 2 (black)
and 3 (red).
At a time only two plugs are used on the measuring
instrument.
The plugs to be used for a particular jack are clearly indicated
on the module and on the level plan.
Any mistake in selection of plugs will give wrong results.
